Yankee Capts pulley ridge excursion 9/29-10/2

I'm gonna try to keep it short and sweet but detailed.......
So I get to the boat on Monday 9/29 @ 3pm,our departure wasn't till 8pm.There was Glen and his buddy Nick which I later learned would be a nuisance.Shortly after Capt Greg arrived and gave the green light to begin boarding.I unloaded everything,coolers,2 batteries, battery charger, rods, tackle bag, sleeping gear.....etc.In the meantime some familiar faces joined the party Jarbas,Dominic,Bruce and I made a new friend "Mudhog".Mudhog is one country a$$ dude, funny too,he has a strong country accent and is a big fella,so u can only imagine.Anyway,we reach our takeoff time and begin the journey,After rigging all my rods and making deep drop rigs,I hit the sack around 1 A.M. Woke up about 6:45 am and began to troll along with 5 others, within 10 minutes my tiagra 50 was screaming and I took it up to the second floor where I was able to get the wahoo on plane and skip on the surface,I told everyone to reel in their lines so I won't get wrapped, and right behind the boat we had a solid 30lb wahoo skyrocket about 13 ft up and miss another angler Lure, that was amazing never seen one jump that high, well mines was way back and popped off so that was the end of wahoo madness till later on,we get to the fishing grounds about 9:30 am,and begin to drop down, now guys if I can recommend anything on this trip is to not deviate from the recommendations that are on the Yankee Capts website and if the capt asks u to do something a certain way just do it.We had guys dropping with 4lb leads when everyone else was using 2lbs and holding good with that lead, also we had another guy using a salmon rod that must have been 13 ft tall and flimsy as can be,**** thing was good to use as a mango net, anyways people all this does is tangle everyone else up and make for a bad time, back to the fishing the bite was non existent for a couple of hours then at around 12:30 it started to pick up and some fish started to come up,quality fish the first day but a little slow compared to what this place can provide. We caught 15-30lb barrel fish and ginormous queen snappers. My barrel fish ended up weighing 15lbs and my biggest queen was 18lbs.I saw 1 queen that was about 23lbs.I think everyone caught a queen on this trip.

snowy grouper and grey tiles were the main catch

Later on a wahoo was caught trolling

So at about 8pm we head to fish shallower in about 130ft,now this is all drift fishing, anchoring is not allowed.I learned how to bottom fish on drift boats out of Haulover,fl so I can say I was comfortable,I saw many others were having a hard time so they went to bed, anyways I ended up catching 5 muttons between 8-12 lbs, many BIG red groupers were caught as well, the only thing we missed out on was on the hot tuna bite that we usually get out here,I had been on 2 previous trips out here and on both we were infested with the blackfins, not the case here.Sunrise came upon us Wednesday and we headed back towards the deep drop,we caught allot more fish the second time around ,if the first day would have been like the second this would have been a truly epic trip, but none the less we caught a crap load of fish same suspects snowies, grey tiles ,queens yellow edge grouper, fire back groupers,Warsaw groupers.........
20lb yellow edge

Well that time came upon us and we heard that voice from above that we are done and pretty much full of fish it was 8:30pm.Both white boxes and both blue boxes were full and for 16 anglers that means we did very well,I went downstairs for some shut eye and woke up at 7:30am when the boat was arriving at the dock ,unloaded all my gear off the boat and into my truck and waited for the fish to be distributed

Some crustaceans that plenty of these deep water species spit out

A special thanks to Capt Greg thanks for bringing us back safe and putting us on the fish. Thanks to the mates that work so hard specially with all the tangles, thank you Lynden,Matt and Johnny,I'm really glad to have Johnny back on he is a great mate and knows his *****,can't forget about the chef Joe,thank you all.Ohh and for those of you that were wondering about the weather

Thanks for taking the time to write a report.

All I can say is if people listen to me trips would be shorter with more fish in their coolers. It is incredibly frustrating to see people struggle with junk gear and then complain about the catching. Remember folks you also screw it up for everyone when you don't fish correctly. Tangles mean less fishing time. Which equals less fish in your cooler. Rant over.

What Greg said! Still don't understand how a guy on the stern can get tangled with the guy on the very bow of the boat time and time again and not understand that something is wrong. Felt sorry for the mates. Anyway still had a good time and came home with dinner(s).

Great report! I'd really like to try one of these trips next year,, as I haven't been to the Tortugas since my father has passed. I went to the YC website to look at a few of the trips for next year. Looks like spots are on the port side only (20 total) correct?? Does the bow fish better than the stern??? Thanks!

Yes, the Pulley Ridge trips are limited to 20 spots on the port side. Some people like the bow, some people like the stern. If the drift is right it should not matter where you're fishing. If the better fishermen are on the bow they will catch more fish, if they are on the stern they will catch more fish. Just my opinion.

by the way, how did you get your pix to look like they were taken in in the 1980's?

Great report Bob#1 (XAF). I see you are refining your skills on those trips. Glad things are working out better and better, well except for the knuckleheads. I guess every party boat has them. I'd like to learn some of the tricks/techniques that you have found that work for the deep dropping from a party boat. Mark has scheduled two trips, one is in Oct. and one is in Nov. to a deep drop area and I want to as best prepared as I can. Glad you got some good fish! I will make it down there with you sometime!

gtpvette, I believe for the price the Tanacom 1000 is the right reel. Lately I've seen a lot of them on the Pulley trips. It holds enough line that if you accidentally break off you probably have enough line left to continue fishing.

Tanacom 1000 is definitely the best bet both suitable and affordable,if you can dish out the xtra $700 then go for the Seaborg.,but tanacom does the job, make sure you get a marine deep cycle battery,I brought 2 of my old AC Delco truck batteries and each lasted only about 6 hours and had to charge them overnight onboard.Marine deep cycle is the way to
    Go.

If your looking for good electrics call Hopkins Marine. They should have a few of them on consignment. I have 2 Tanacom Bull 1000's for Kite fishing and a little red megat. 1000 both work very good and I have never had a issue. Also have a buddy that uses them for trolling for wahoo (6-8 knots) seen him hook doubles and just push the button, serious meat fishing machines. Use the bulls for jigging Tunas on the hump when the sharks are around, gets them in fast.

Couple things. I totally agree with Bob. I have a 750 and have had to re-spool during the trip. I would've been ok with the 1000. Also agree with using a marine deep cycle. I used a 27 series and fished three days straight on the iron man and never recharged.
  • gtpvettegtpvette Posts: 181 Deckhand
Thanks guys. I think the 1000 is the way to go,, although the 750 looks smaller and lighter which ccould be good during a long day of fishing. A guy on the hull truth sells them for $599 spooled with Spectra. Seems he recommend 80lb but **** thats a lot,,, I'd hate to have to try to break that off. It also seems the Skipper of the Yankee Capt recemmended 50lb. Is 65lb a reasonable compromise?

I think Greg has upped his recommendation to 65lb braid. Also on the braid, I would highly recommend "hi vis" if you can get it. It really helps with tangles and seeing what your line is doing. I second the marine deep cycle battery. BTW, I have a good deal for someone on a new Diehard Platinum group 31 deep cycle marine battery if anyone is interested. New $289 +tax +core will sell for $160. Just too heavy for me to cart around, carry on and off boat, etc.

I fished the very first pulley ridge trip and recently did my second with the yankee capt. Have both the Tanacum 750 and 1000 and both are very good. Only differnece is line capacity. As far as line definitely something highly visible to help with tangles, want to be able to see line to try to prevent tangles before they happen. Used 50 lb on 750 for extra line capacity and 65 on 1000 and both get the job done.

Just back again. A new group with very few who ever deep dropped. All new shiny gear. Took them 3 hours to get the hang of it.

Same old report. Everything full, out of ice. Everyone caught dinner.

    Pulley Ridge rocks again.

I read on a Yankee Capts fishing report that you can buy a Tanacom 1000 online from pelagic outfitters for $599. I bought one from them that's waiting for me in Fla. They have reel covers and as well, extra. Shipping is free and they spool it with your choice of line, including high vis. Can't wait to use it, and if the wind keeps us from going this winter, I'll be deep dropping in 30 feet of water......
