4/27 Red Grouper + Snapper! Ft Myers Offshore

We departed Punta Rassa at 6:45 and headed to net some bait. Blackened the well in 45 minutes with enough threadfins and pilchards. We set off to the Fantastico to get our yellowtail on, but the bite was just off. When we first set up however, we had a nice estimated 30lb cobia swim up. Two of us tossed big threadies at it and was not phased. Meanwhile one buddy had his little 3" white bait just barely in the water while he was getting a bigger bait. The cobia swam past the threadies and took the whitebait ran and broke the 20lb leader. Free-lining with shrimp, squid, threadfins, pilchards they did not want to bite at all. 15' of 20lb leader and nada... We burned one chum block and decided to move to nab some mangroves. Set up once again and began catching good sized ones. Live pilchards were the candy on a 1/2oz knocker rig on 20lb flouro. With the shrimp, you could catch as many vermilion's your heart desired. We only ended up keeping 7, with 8 mangroves in the box as well.

1:30 rolled around and decided to go fish for red grouper. First drop down, I send a bare jig shortly thereafter bring up a 28" red grouper. Did a few more drifts and only picked up another fish from that #. Bounced around here and there, picking up a few on some swiss cheese. 6 Pm came by and we only had 6 grouper in the boat. I kept one pinfish after we tossed out all of the threadies and pilchards, dropped it down and pulled up an absolute pig red grouper. When we threw him in the box, out it spit a nice octopus. Everyone quickly baited on the octopus and everyone hooked up. 6:30 came and we landed another 6 in the boat.

The day was saved again and had a total tally of 13 red grouper 8 mangroves and 7 vermillions. In the photo's the big mangroves were 21" and 22", just for reference with the grouper.
