Attacked while surfing!

There I was Saturday afternoon way south of Micklers. I was the only one out and very few people were walking around the beach. The mullet were constantly stirring up the water around me. It was getting late and I was waiting on a good wave to take me in. I'm straddling my board looking twords the horizon when I feel a flat rough surface under both my feet and both my legs raise up. At that same time both sides of the water erupt with flapping fins. After the initial shock I realized it was a Manta Ray. Unfortunately the girl on the beach that screamed SHARK! at the top of her lungs didn't. Luckily it wasn't a big deal and thankfully it wasn't a Tiger shark.:hairraiser

I was out at Guana yesterday and small (4' to 5') black tips or spinners were getting airborne like crazy...they were a couple hundred yards offshore, but it pretty much lasted all day. My wife said "I keep seeing tarpon jump"...those aren't tarpon I said. Pretty cool to watch.

Saturday we were surfing the same area and a group of porpoises came through launching themselves through the back of the waves. That was really cool to see.

Oh yea, had a blast surfing Saturday although it feels like someone hit me in the sternum with a baseball bat, man am I sore!

I'm really disappointed. Such a great opportunity and you didn't even check for a cobia?

Sorry Guys, I was certainly curious too. However the water was murky and at the time I wasn't up for feeling around for one. :wink

We had quite a few bigger rays in the surf saturday in daytona beach shores. a little startling in the chocolate swell, for sure. it stayed 3-5' and pretty much perfect til dark. the next a.m. mighta been 1.5' :(

Was going to give you a call last weekend Trey for some surfing. Have some fresh scallops from Steinhatchee recently. Got some pesto?

Hey Greg, Looks like we'll be getting some more waves soon. I'll give you a call.

No pesto. Basil plants are hurting. Time to start over.

That must have scared the ***** out of you, I probably would have passed out.

Seems like a good as place as any to share my related stories.

One time when wading with the floppy rod for reds I had to cross a deeper and dirtier area of the flat. As I was walking as fast as possible across it (I don't like wading where I can't see) I stopped to figure out where to go and at that moment something very large went between my legs. Now when I say went between, the **** thing was so big it pushed my legs outward and lifted me up a few inches, which felt like feet. I have no idea what it was, it didn't feel like a shark and I actually never even saw evidence of it in the water. I guess it could have been a ray.

One of my favorites was having to drop a #2 in a river. I jumped in the water to swim to a nice sandy shady spot on shore. As I'm walking into what I thought was a big mud spot, I walked knee level right into a huge manatee that I guess was just sun bathing under water. Needless to say the explosion that occurred when that manatee took off was both in the water and in my pants.

This time of year it's inevitable. It's either pogies or mullet. I've been out before where you couldn't paddle without hitting a fish.

Fingers crossed. Like you I though we were going to have something last Sunday. At least long board.

Funny Stories! I've stepped on many creatures in the water without knowing what the hell they were. :hairraiser

Thats crazy. I was in the water at Little Talbot on Sunday and it was super murky with lots of bait... it made me a little nervous. Thats when sharks make mistakes and think a human is dinner.

A long time ago I was surfing in a crowd at the poles and about 20' away from me I saw a dolphin hit a guy floating on his board. It hit him and swam away and he just said "nice fishy". It must have hit him on accident.
