My guess is it was to protect the finish of the boat or rod or boat from the rod rubbing against the gunwale. Why was the guy on his knees reeling backwards?
I'm kind of suprised that this is still legal. Seems like FWC would love nothing more than to write tickets for targeting jewfish. I can hear it now.... "Captain, I have a gun and a badge. This is a protected species. The tackle on board INDICATES to ME that you are here to molest a protected species. I am issuing a ticket based on what I THINK you are up to." Would be a great revenue source for the water cops. Perhaps I should have kept my mouth shut.
Actually, I shouldn't complain. It's been almost two years since I've been messed with. USCG has been a bigger pain in my butt than marine patrol. My biggest beef is when I'm stopped and screwed with for almost two hours during a tournament 50nm from the hill. Oh, that and when they unpack almost 500# of fish from the ice and then expect my crew to put it back the WAY THEY FOUND IT! Often times I'll tie the boat up with perfectly iced fish and come back the next day to clean. Sucks to screw up a heaping pile of perfectly iced fish for NO REASON. After that experience I started telling them that they are more than welcome to check our fish, but they better leave them the way they found them. If that requires an extra 20# of ice due to melt, then they can send somebody to the marina. This has done wonders for me.

At one point he's winding clockwise and then his right hand reaches across reel and does something on left face of reel, then he comes back to wind and he winds counterclockwise. New to me. Awaiting explanation.

It's a Duel reel. Duel have a patented automatic gear box. The angler never has to take his hand off the handle. Reeling backwards is low gear and reeling forwards is high gear.

Sorry for derail.
Anglers are permitted to target goliath groupers. It is illegal to remove goliath groupers from the water. If an angler removes a goliath grouper from the water, this is considered a harvest. In my opinion, fishing for goliath groupers is no different then fishing for snook out of season or tarpon without a permit or bonefish or any other species in Florida that is illegal to harvest.
Personally, I don't care to catch fish to eat. I enjoy the thrill of the fight. Big sharks, big groupers, anything really big is fun to me. If it was illegal to target them, I wouldn't fish for them.

I know and understand this. I was just saying that I'm surprised the rule-writers have not found a way to legislate out of existence the targeting of jewfish. Seems like the over-educated do-gooders would hate your videos. I love them.

Usually the over-educated do-gooders hate fishing and hunting etc.

Yean I guess so, not sure I like reeling backwards. Just took down the 80W to be sure and it cranks forward on both low and high

The tubing protects the boat and the rod from being scratched.

I loved the vids btw too.
Make that 100%, forward is high gear and backwards is low gear, great reels those Duel's.
