Perhaps we know why U.S. citizens fail to save $'s
In the 1950's the average home size in the U.S. was 984 square feet while today it is nearly 2400 square feet. While the average home has more than doubled the averaged family size has decreased from 3.59 people in the 50's to 2.55 today. Of course these are averages and I know my family was larger in the 50's but my parents house was much larger than even today. I grew up in a household of 6 and sure wouldn't have wanted to live in a 2000 s.q. ft house much less 984.
Think I'll look at medians.

I have 36 first cousins...
We have a daughter en route in March and our son just turned 5.
And our house is just under 2400 sq ft. Lovin Life
One daughter just started at UGA(THWG!) and the other has 2.5 years left in high school, then it's me and the wife.
Current house is 7,039(1,893 is finished basement) square feet heated and the new house will only be 4,529(1,945 is finished basement) heated.
I wanted to go smaller, but just couldn't manage it.
The house that we had before the current house was 1,500 square feet heated.
It trips me out that so many folks are having "hard times" and they have two new SUV's 5 wide screen TV's, kids playing expensive travel sports, everyone has an I-Phone, ect. Whatever happened to living within your means?

Living the dream
The house I grew up in was roughly 6000 sq ft, no basement and it sometimes seemed crowded with 6 of us living there.
I'm a homebuilder.
I built the house 10 years ago with the intention of selling it two years later and realizing $500,000 tax free gain.
I got busy and never found a piece of property that I wanted to build our last house on(although we bought a couple). Finally I found a small tract that was decent(not perfect) so we are gonna get it built, move and then put the present house on the market.
