Nice photo. I will play. The following photos were taken yesterday, in Palm Beach County. Let's just say it is "time."

That is a great pair. Are they dueling?

I was lucky to get the shot of mine. While waiting for a pileated woodpecker the heron landed about 150 feet away so I took a few quick shots of him. Woodpecker never showed up.

    Taken in Estero FL.

Let's call it a love spat. He wanted some and she wasn't ready. LOL!

Let's see what you have of the pileated!

I have been back to the area where I have seen it in the past but it hasn't showed up for the last 4 days. They usually will come around again

Let's keep this thread going....the heron thread. If you got 'em, post 'em. It is mating season you must have more.

This one is for Mississippi Mac.

Title: "In the Wind" Shot 12-28-13, in Palm Beach County. The wind was blowing so hard it was bouncing my lens around. I didn't know if I had a shot or not, until I got home.

great shot and the B&W gives it a lot of charater...

i was actually fooling around with some of my old heron images using topaz's B&W plugin...
i was pretty surprised at the results....

however, just as i was getting warmed up i got called off to do a honey-do....
weather is supposed to be crap tomorrow so i'll resume my efforts and post...

Not sure of the name of this heron. The yellow legs threw me off.

Nikon D7000 & Nikkor 500mm & 1.4 TC, in the top case. Without the TC in the bottom case.

The D7000 has more reach than my D610 so at this location the D7000 travels.

I have some other images that would be better in B&W but these were easy to find...
and indeed, lets keep this thread going...i'd like to see some white variants as they are not found this far north (so far)....

Nice work. I like the one of the critter with its wing out. Nice PP on that one too. Sweet.

At some point on this thread it expanded from GHBs to include other species.

Below are a few from yesterday, (01-20-14.)

    1. "The Offering" A mating pair of GBHs in the glades south of Lake O.
    ujv0bA7l.jpg

    2. A Least Bittern. It is substantially smaller, perhaps a third the size of the better known American Bittern.

    3. A Great Egret in the long evening light.

    4. A Black and White Warbler.

    Craig...

    the warbler image is sweet...
i have found it very difficult over the years to capture warbler images because of the way they move around so quickly....
that one seems to posing for you, complete with food...

bitterns are kind of rare up here...you really need to know where and how to look for them which usually requires a boat to get to their remote places in the marsh or way up in the bayou systems....
