Grouse in Florida?

Fish HaidFish Haid Posts: 8,215 Admiral
I saw a bird that looked exactly like this photo struttung around my yard this morning. I thought it was injured or baby turkey (or something) because it was acting lost, and ran away instead of flying. Then, when cornered, it flew away to the next yard. I never saw a bird like this around here (Gainesville). I think it's a Grouse.

Size? Sort of looks like a grouse. Stranger things have happened.

I'm going with immature quail - last spring's bird. It takes about a year for them to get their mature colors.

Are there any shooting preserves in your area which release birds?

The pic you posted is a Ruffed Grouse, I sorta doubt its what you saw.....often times shooting preserves will release birds that look kinda similar to ruffed grouse from a distance, maybe a chuker partridge etc....

I beg your pardon. I had some last week end.

Probably some type of Guinea Fowl, or a hybrid of one and quail. At one time in North Central Florida, it was just about as popular for people to have a few of those as it was to have chickens.

    I say......I say son.......new & improved my tail feathers.
