9/21 Fullmoon Snapper bite!

It's been a while since my last report, we are awaiting payment from the insurance company and will hopefully have a replacement boat soon! We headed out with a good friends, Jim Paytas owner of Hot Tops Marine, around 6pm out of the Bokeelia ramp. We headed straight out of Boca Grande to search for some threadies in the pass or on the beaches but to no avail they weren't there. We ran to a rock pile in about 60' north west of boca grande and set up for the snapper. By the time we got there it was dark and no moon just yet. A steady south current which shifted later to south west the next morning. We put out a box of chum and the snapper started biting! We were only using squid, and managed a 3 man limit in a few hours. I was personally using about 10' of 20 lb yozuri HD flouro and a small 2/0 circle hook. This setup caught most of the fish including all but 4 mangroves for the night. Other's were using about 5' of 20 lb pre-cut leaders which worked for yellowtails and about a 1/8 oz jig head tipped with squid. Our total resulted in 11 mangroves, that largest was right around 21" and 19 yellowtails with the largest being 19". I was quite surprised for the sizes of YT for being only in 55' of water the whole evening. The bite was relatively slow, but we did finish the limit at 3:30. We ended up only using 3 blocks of chum. When the sun rose, we moved south to some hard bottom areas where we picked up a nice 27" red grouper. We decided to call it in the morning and got back to the dock at around 11 am.
