Near offshore 14 miles out of redfish pass 8/24/13

My son Craig just bought a couple of new rods Ugly Stix and a new Penn reel not sure model it was a bait runner $180.00 or so and was ready to give them a workout..
One of Marys and mine favorite eating fish are snapper, porgys and grunts. So plan was to run out to some ledges not far out forecast was good well 1to2s more like 2 to 4s a little bouncy but doable. Way too fast to drift also tough to get right on or up tide of the ledges that we hit.
First drop we both hook up with a few shorts then a couple of 19 7/8 fatties just short. We moved about 5 times. Now we are using the lighter rods and smaller baits and hooks for the snapper ,porgy bite. With the bigger rods and bait in holders. You know what happened Craig gets hooked up nice 22 inch keeper fun on a light spin reel.
We caught a nice mix of lanes, porgys, one grunt:huh even boated a cobia that we had free lined a bait out the back in the chum slick about 28 inch short but fun.We had a few bite offs also.
There was some surface action come by from time to time. We were in 55ft water was clear thank goodness for that.
Good to be on the water.
