Per FWC - NOAA Fisheries recently announced the 2013 season dates for Atlantic red snapper in federal waters. Red snapper will open for one three-day weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) beginning August 23 and continuing through August 25. The bag limit will remain at one fish per person per day and there will be no minimum size limit.

I thought they were supposed to give 30 days notice? I also thought they were going to give us more time, not less time or may a two fish limit?

Gotcha. I've been traveling and this was the first I saw of it. Was hoping someone had the scoop on why they reduced it from last year.

The model they use accounts for a very hefty amount of snapper interaction (read this as release mortality) over the winter months, a time period that anyone who actually fishes knows there are few trips offshore due to weather and when virtually all troll instead of bottom fish (when they can get out) due to closures to grouper, snapper, Beeliners and sea bass. We need to be pounding them with the fact that there is almost zero interaction with snapper in the first few months of the year. Those fish that they say are dying due to wintertime release mortality would be added to what we can catch when they open the season.
