Atlantic Red Snapper open August 23-25?

Per FWC - NOAA Fisheries recently announced the 2013 season dates for Atlantic red snapper in federal waters. Red snapper will open for one three-day weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) beginning August 23 and continuing through August 25. The bag limit will remain at one fish per person per day and there will be no minimum size limit.

I thought they were supposed to give 30 days notice? I also thought they were going to give us more time, not less time or may a two fish limit?

I believe they posted this about a week ago, so it's probably right on the 30 day time limit. One weekend in the peak of hurricane season many thanks!

Gotcha. I've been traveling and this was the first I saw of it. Was hoping someone had the scoop on why they reduced it from last year.

The scoop is they want us to support other country's and only buy/eat tilapia.

In the gulf you don't need any fishing gear. Just ride out and pick the dead ones off the top.

I went back and forth with them on the 30-day thing and basically they showed me a loophole they have where they can enact it at any time and not have to give the 30 days.

A couple of items to note: the powers that be say that we overfished out allocation during last year's 6 days (that were all but unfishable due to weather). The commercials sector under fished theirs. The only reason there is a season at all is the commercials not catching theirs.

The model they use accounts for a very hefty amount of snapper interaction (read this as release mortality) over the winter months, a time period that anyone who actually fishes knows there are few trips offshore due to weather and when virtually all troll instead of bottom fish (when they can get out) due to closures to grouper, snapper, Beeliners and sea bass. We need to be pounding them with the fact that there is almost zero interaction with snapper in the first few months of the year. Those fish that they say are dying due to wintertime release mortality would be added to what we can catch when they open the season.
