Visiting Cocoa Beach - Cape Canaveral first week of July

Hi all:

We are coming for our annual week of fun during the first week of July. We are staying Cocoa Beach - but are 'mobile'. Found a place ( http://beachsideboatrentals.com/ ) to rent a boat. Any advice on fishing from a boat on the Indian or Banana rivers would be greatly appreciated. In other years we went on charters, but now want to strike out on our own for a few trips.

I am sure the marina will have the proper baits. I am reading about top water baits. Been fishing that way all my life. Which top water baits does anyone suggest. How about a fly rod ( my passion )?

Thanks in advance
Mike & Sarah

Zara spook for sure or skitter walk those are my favorites. I'm not a fly fisherman but baby tarpon in the canals and snook on the beach(on a flat day of course) I hear is fun

Try and find clear water, grass helps if you can find some around there. I'd stick to structure fishing for the most luck

Be careful if you go to the beach within the Cocoa Beach city limits. The city recently put Beach Rangers on four wheelers to patrol the beach and ensure that a laundry list of rules and regulations are enforced with a iron fist. Stick to Cape Canaveral, they are much more friendly there!

15 bucks an hour for a 14 foot vee hull aluminum boat............... with no trolling motor??
I can't say as I like your chances... What time will you be able to get the boat?
Does your wife/GF like wade fishing?
I ask because you probably could use the boat to get yourself to places.... and then get out and wade....

senor duck brings up a good point, wading offers stealth that you cant get in a vessel... makes it easier to fish all around.. not the most glamorous way to fish but.. definently the most effective way :grin

Just curiouse on where your staying or if you have any recommendation of a nice place to stay. I noticed many smaller hotels along the beach last year but hard to find any info on them. I plan to be there July 4th week.
