Mosquito Lagoon night fishing 05-24

Headed up to my favorite spot in Florida for the weekend, MY idea of paradise: Titusville, FL. (some locals my laugh at this.)

Talked to a member of the Space Coast Kayak Anglers group and decided on a night trip with the moon at 98% and shrimp and crabs running. Showed up at the spot and were greeted by a rocket launch first thing. Very cool.

We launched and started doing drifts with live shrimp through the Haulover bridge. One of our members hooked up after an hour or so, on a small blue crab we had plucked off the surface near a light. Another guy had a double hook up a few moments after that, but he lost both fish in the confusion. First red of the night ended up being mid 30's. After another hour or two we decided to head out to the lagoon and hit a deep hole that was somewhat nearby. We showed up and anchored up, and immediately hooked up. With a catfish. and I lost my bait to a small something. ****. We re-deployed baits and sat for a few minutes. All of the sudden one of us hooks up. With something big. It starts stripping line and he's anchored up. One of our group goes to help him get the anchor up, and they go off together to chase down this fish. I'm left alone. I am a little frustrated at this point, and decide to try some cut mullet. I threw a shrimp on just to have a bait it the water, and looked for my knife (which took about 3 minutes). I found it and checked the bait just in case. Great I had a catfish on. All the tell tale catfish signs. Wiggle wiggle. No fight. Start reeling him up to get it off. I'm pretty pissed at this point. Once I get it near the boat, the catfish (or so I thought) gained about 20 lbs, and turned into a redfish. It took off. Fast. I thought my reel was going to overheat. I was still anchored, and the fish was in the current, moving away from me very quickly. I knew I needed to get the anchor up. So with the rod in one hand, and the anchor line in the other, I hauled it up, and the fish went limp. ****. reeled in the line and he was still there! The fight was back on. I saw some flashes in the distance, my buddies taking pictures of the fish they had landed, the were about 200 yards away. I peddled (hobie kayak) over that way and finally made it to them right as the fish was tiring. It came to the surface, my buddy got the lip grippers out, and fish landed. I don't know the size, but it's the biggest redfish I've caught from my kayak, and possibly my biggest ever (which was 35 inches). Mean mug for a mean red.
