There should be NO Commercial Fishing for any fish species considered 'Over-fished' , 'Undergoing Overfishing' or Subject to Recreational Seasons, Limits, or Closures... Game Fish Status IS the Answer !!!

There are about three counties in the panhandle that have a different season than the rest of the Gulf coast. State and Federal waters regulations for Groupers should be the same. That's why the State changed their regulations. But, don't take my word for it, Google FWC and read the new regulations.

NO, you have to go off shore and catch your red grouper and then troll for gag's in state water later. If you catch a gag in state water and then go and fish in federal water and get checked in fed water you will be in possession of a fish that is out of season in fed water and given a ticket.

Federal regulations are based on possession. If you have it on the boat in federal waters it is considered you caught it in federal waters.
My purpose on this site is to help everyone understand Federal Fishery Regulations and to provide information. Working with the Florida Sportsman is a collateral (volunteer) duty I asked for and enjoy; I will only give you an answer that I’m willing to put my name on and stand behind. Sometimes that means checking with other agents/offices in the area of concern.

  • Sometimes I think NOAA enforcement doesn't get it. They run you guys ragged over a domestic regulated fish, then completely look the other way on HMS issues.

I am not a fan of NOAA enforcement and probably never will be. I can't understand the domestic snapper and grouper issues when over on this coast we can't get any help at all with any HMS unless its a million dollar enforcement issue that get headlines. Its like NOAA enforcement is run by the press secretary....

For instance, you have one captain who regularly posts on the fishing reports in Southeast that was nailed dead to rights with illegal buoy fishing and NOAA and FWC did absolutely nothing, thus promoting illegal and unreported fishing. Oh, but get caught with a grouper in your box and its all over. I seriously don not understand who sets priority in this completely ineffective agency.

Best bet for sequestering would be to un-fund NOAA Enforcement. You would see no difference at all in our fisheries.

Sorry Allan, but your agency is impotent on the Florida East Coast! Maybe need some viagra.

Just let the CG completely take it over and avoid the duplication with no responsibility!
