Oculina experimental zone

I've been to busy to keep up with the fisheries mess so I need an update on where the SAFMC is going. I am happy to see meaningful conservation efforts but the OEZ has turned in to the poster child of poor fishery management. For years there is/has been no funding for experiments or enforcement so, what is the foundation of the continued closure recommendation? It seems to me that, if management of deep water grouper/snapper/ARS is moving to a highly regulated tag system, there is little reason for the area to remain closed. Since they are going to expand the HAPC, would it not make more sense to incorporate the experimental zone under the same rule structure? Is there a big picture view I am missing? Thanks.

Are you talking about the Oculina bank? I always read it was closed to protect the Oculina sponge not the fish.
