At a meeting this afternoon in Tallahassee, Space Florida’s board approved funding to complete renovations to a former shuttle hangar and to repurpose another local facility for commercial use.

Work to ready Orbiter Processing Facility-3 and a nearby office building at Kennedy Space Center for The Boeing Co. may cost $20 million, with the funding coming from the state and private sources.

Boeing plans to assemble its CST-100 commercial crew spacecraft in the former shuttle hangar.

Demolition of the hangar's shuttle infrastructure began last fall; the project's next phase will modernize it for Boeing's use.

Up to $5 million in Florida Department of Transportation funding, if secured this year as expected, will help transition another unspecified existing facility at KSC or Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

According to the meeting's agenda, the facility would be used as a "spacecraft, cargo, and crew processing facility for heavy lift launch of commercial satellites, space station cargo and ultimately commercial crew missions."

The state funding will be matched to reach a minimum investment of $10 million.

Under another initiative dubbed Project Tag, Space Florida committed to spend up to $1 million over two years to help one of NASA’s commercial crew partners secure safety approvals and range services for initial launch operations from the Air Force’s 45th Space Wing.

Meh, from what I read somewhere they are only going to hire about 100 people. Additionally, they want to carve out a big section of Merritt Island National Wildlfie Refuge, even though NASA isn't doing richard anymore. They want to land grap out of the existing security zone so they don't have to abide by any federal rules. I didn't invent this, a former NASA shuttle worker gave me the scoop on them.

    That's Federal funding.
It's only socialism when they spend it on stuff you don't like.

That wasn't my point. It was that there may be some actual jobs, and spin off jobs. Fact is to use your point, that figure is remarkably less than what the Fed has spent at KSC, looking back. If you want the figure to be zero, I can live with that.

You guys are funny. You **** when KSC gets closed down and now you are biatchin' 'bout this.

I like stuff that makes money. This will make money.
