Wild Boars invade New York State

FloydFloyd Posts: 1,135 Officer
Seems that they have gone feral and are out of control. The state has issued a $230,000 grant to study the issue. With an estimated 200 hogs on the loose that's about a thousand dollars per hog. Probably would have been better to just put a bounty on them and let hunters do the job.

Seems their biggest problem is a lack of hunters.

Really? The researcher is asking for more funding, really?

OK, here is your report. Wild bores are in northern European countries with climatic zones similar the geography of NY state. It should be no surprise they have spread their range into the state. Create an open season on them before the population grows too large. Done. $230K, please.

The feral swine are a non-native species suspected of escaping from game farms

Kill the hogs and close the game farms.

WaterEngineer, you need to just be quiet and don't waste your breath! You use too much common sence in your approach to this problem!

I've pounded my drum and beat my tamborine on this subject forever here on the Forum, and have even been critized as "unethical" for advocating killing feral hogs any way possible including gut shooting if a clean kill can't be made. Nothing is more damaging to the natural environment than feral hogs. Even micro-organisms in the soil in a native Longleaf Pine-Wiregrass forest type are damaged. Then there's the spread of diseases to native wildlife populations....this could go on and on! Ask any wildlife biologist or forester!

Every environmental scientist and biologist I work with and know on a professional level advocates the killing of feral hogs. They are a major detriment to native habitats.

As for the NY problem, send the hogs to Brooklyn. The locavore and home charcuterie craze is in full swing there. The more whole pigs to slaughter, cook, cure, and smoke, the better.

****, I can think of ways to make money and solve the issue. Open a season, charge to kill them, like most states do with game permits. Manage it well and get some nice big hogs there that way people will come from out of state and spend money in the local communities. It's a win, win situation. If New York is reading this forum please make 200K check payable to Mrs. Jboat. :beer
