Update On My Son's Food Allergy Condition...

JesseJamesJesseJames Posts: 2,408 Captain
We had a follow up "panel" exam with an Allergist, a Pediatric GI Specialist, a Nutritionist and a Dietician today...Unfortunately it wasn't good news. Through RAST tests they've been able to determine that he is allergic to Beef, Pork, Corn and Shrimp...So we've had to put further restrictions on his elimination diet. He is now unable to have any of the following or derivatives made from them...

- Dairy
- Wheat
- Eggs
- Soy
- Beef
- Pork
- Corn
- Shrimp

We had to restart the "clock" for his next Upper GI Scope for six weeks from now since we've eliminated this last group of foods. He's also going back in for additional RAST testing next week and Patch testing the following week. We're hoping that with the elimination diet he's been on for the first four food types and the further allegy testing we may eventually be able to rule some of the first group out and get them back in his diet.

We were praying for some relief after this appt. but it went the complete opposite direction. The limitations from the first four were challenging enough but the addition of these next four are brutal. Particularly the corn (ever look and see how many products contain Corn Syrup or Oil?) We're hoping the seafood allergy is liimited to crustaceans or shellfish and not all fish in general and we're partnering with the Allergist to have additional patch testing done on Venison to see if he can have that or if it's all red meat.

Trying to stay strong for the family's sake...just needed a place to dump it all out...

Thanks,

James

Goat is becoming more and more available as well - very similar to venison with no gamey taste.
    Good Luck man!

Wow that's tough. My son had the corn allergy and that like you said is in many items. But your son's list is quite daunting, best of luck

wow...sorry to hear it. Seems to be an epidemic of sorts in regards to child food allergies and I reckon it has to do with how our food is produced. I just watched Food, Inc. for the first time and even though I wasn't oblivious to the practices in mass food production, it was still a bit shocking. Hopefully he will outgrow it. I'm curious if he's allergic to organically grown food of the same type?
  • Good luck to you and the family, hang tough.

That's quite a list and all encompassing.

How do they come to the conclusion that he is allergic to all of those foods?

Good luck. We are in an amazing time with new treatments all the time. What is miserable now may have a simple treatment in 5yrs.

That is a long list. That will be hard. Hopefully he likes chicken and fish, and those are good for you as well.
Any chance that he might grow out of some of that. My daughter had a classmate that was allergic to dairy products and peanuts. Any time that we had a function for her class at our house we had to make sure that there wasn't a trace of peanut anything around.
He finally grew out of it to a large degree.

His condition is called Eosynophilic Esophagitis. Basically it's an immuno-hyper reaction to several foods that causes a build up of white blood cells in his esophagus. This is how they identify the condition. The damage caused by the inflamation can lead to long term scarring and furrowing of the esophagus which can lead to swallowing issues and food impaction. Any long-term inflammation and damage to any cells in the body can lead to cellular changes which can increase the risk of cancer. Sometimes the effect of the allergens at the short term is so miniscule that you can get a false negative test on an allergy test. He tested positive for allergies to beef, pork, corn and shrimp. They've got to do additional testing on the soy, dairy, wheat and eggs. All the normal tests have come back negative so far but the only way to be 100% certain is by a reverse process of elimination. They've had him off the products for 6 weeks. after the 6 weeks they'll do a upper GI scope and see if there's any improvement. Based on their findings they'll add one of the four back into his diet, wait six weeks, do another upper GI scope and see if it shows any signs of damage. Then they'll repeat on the other eliminated items.
