Tampa to get a Bass Pro

restlessnativerestlessnative Posts: 3,078 Captain
Somewhat mixed emotions as I feel bad for the small guys, but also convenient for things they tend not to carry:

How do you guys feel?

As an offshore guy, BPS doesn't really do anything for me.

BPS is like Wally to the small mom pop bait shops.

Fff BPS, dont let them pull you in.

I don't believe it'll have that big of an effect on the local shops. It'll be geared towards the tourist. Just like here in Destin.

Same tired diatribe complete with incomplete and inaccurate facts Gary...

Also, Tallahassee is getting one too. A new smaller store footprint called Bass Pro Shops Outpost...

So you won't be going? :grin

BP is overrated, but it is hard to find a local tackle shop too... (although not in Tampa... or Ft. Meyers/Sanibel for that matter)

Most of the time I go there I don't buy anything. Pretty much all I ever but there are duck loads because they carry far more than the few local shops that carry hunting shot.
Their Redhead gear sucks. Every item of clothing I have gotten from the has failed with one exception. It is not so bad when your gloves rip or waders leek or seep while hunting here, but when this happens in Arkansas while you are standing in water that you had to break ice on to hunt it makes a big difference.

Decent place to buy clothes....never have much in the way of tackle that I use and what they do have is overpriced.

I've never stopped in a BPS and don't plan on it any time soon. The greater Tampa Bay area has lost alot of their local shops in the last 8 years. My hope is that fisher people will support the ones that remain.

I don't know anyone that ever travels to Brandon, except those that work there and live there. If they were smarter, they'd put that someb!tch right there at the SR54/56 apex, just west of the SR56 & I75 intersection.

When the local shops with local knowledge close it will be sad day for many of you. Why would anyone believe local taxpayer should pay BPS to build a road. 95% of every dollar I spend on fishing equipment was at Ace Hardware in Naples, even though the local BPS was a 15 minutes from my home.

    Thats true for sure.

OVerall Tampa really doesn't have anything even close for outdoor/hunting supplies, and one tackle shop. For me it will give me another option instead of Amazon.com. Sometimes you actually like to hold a product before buying it.
The 8 million is a pittance compared to other things the tax payers in Hills have funded (see Ray Jay)

They won't be importing migrants to work in this store. It will be locals, with local knowledge. Probably some of your neighbors.

Bo, see my post in WC.

Mister, as a kid I remember being able to shop Eckerd's for fishing tackle or Webb City and we still had alot of local shops that we used.

I was going to touch on this, still gonna go to my local stores for tackle, but in the way of outdoor and hunting there isn't much to choose from here in Tampa. If there is, I would love to know about it.

Bass Pro can build where ever they wish, but getting $8M in taxpayer funds is ridiculous.

i go there like a kid in a candy store... then I start looking at the things I need and see how overpriced they are, leave dissapointed, wind up going shoping local.

If it's any consolation, you guys on the WC have some of the finest local tackle stores in the country, they have everything you could ever need for any type of fishing. Bass pro sucks nutz! We have one in Orlando on I-drive, you will pay 25-40% more for the same items there, the items you need are always out of stock and their corporate policy dictates that only get what the managers deem necessary for stock. The one in O-town is quite a hike for me, it was a treat to shoot over there for the day and try to pick up a few items. I have not been back in 2 years, the lack of availability on items I needed pushed me over the edge, stick with your local tackle stores.

I wonder how much support and $$$$ BPS is going to render to the recreational salt water fishing sector??

Basically everything you've stated above is untrue and wildly inaccurate. Just an FYI.
