I swore I remember a post just like this a few years ago.
And just like "A Land Remembered", it is worth reading AGAIN....... Good job Magee, yankee skinnin' and all. But why didn't you take the big dawg, he was already pointing....

Indeed you did, Zip, zip, uno. It is in archive heaven now. The original was in response to a forum argument between dog hunters and non-dog hunters. I resurrected it because another argument recently broke out.
Maybe I should come up with something like, "To corn, or not to corn? Hunting the wiley sambar."
Nice thread Magot, good thing it wasn't a big dark deer or the ACLU be all over ya!
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.
Common Sense can't be bought, taught or gifted, yet it is one of the few things in life that is free, and most refuse to even attempt to possess it. - Miguel Cervantes
As a kid growing up in Waycross we used to hunt deer with dogs in the swamps off the Altamaha river near Ludowici. It is an exciting way to do it. To hear the dogs tune change when they got close on the trail, the way their barking and howling changed when they got close to a deer, and then they are coming closer and closer to your position, and then all of a sudden they are on you and the deer erupts from the thick and you have a brief second or two to make the shot. We ran beagles and hunted with shotguns. Every now and then the dogs would actually catch a deer and you wouldn't think a sweet beagle had it in them, but they can turn savage!

Yep, grew up in S.C. in a farming community and at the time we had the longest deer season in the states. We used Walkers, and Blue Ticks on huge leases. The sounds of those dogs are something that I will never forget (just as you described).
When I got a little older would rather prefer to still or stalk hunt, I still have my 1960's version of the 870 and 700. We had so many private places (other local farms) to hunt it makes me sad now to think about it. The deer, turkeys, doves, squirrels were very plentiful.
Not sure to have understood how you use the dogs. The dog stays with you and he warns you when the deers are around ?

We would have 1 or 2 guys that "ran" the dogs, usually 8-12 hounds. They would start off on one side of a swamp run, on a small dry ridge or hammock and run the dogs through the flooded swamp areas. The hunters lined up on the next dry ridge, sometimes a mile or more away, sometimes closer. The dogs and the runners crossed the swamp, flushing the deer towards the waiting hunters.

One of the funniest post I have ever seen. :grin
Good job!!!
Deer hunting with a mutt is metro.
No, but anything that was written "by" BHO, Fat Al Gore or Billary will suffice for that duty.
Now back to the OP - nice post - I am sure you taught some young fellers a thing or five.
