This is a great video on the current status of our red snapper situation.
Quick facts; There are 3x the number of red snapper inside the Alabama Reefing zones ALONE than the NMFS admits existing in the ENTIRE Gulf of Mexico.
Keep in mind that this does not include the world's largest de facto artificial reefing area - the thousands of oil platforms in the Gulf.
Crabtree and Co. want us to believe that every time that they reduce our seasons/bag limits, that we respond by increasing our effort, exponentially, in order to catch even more poundage of fish in a fraction of the time with one hand tied behind our back (1/2 bag limits) EACH YEAR. However, this fantasy is beginning to be exposed for what it is - A FANTASY. In 2006 the reefing areas offshore of Alabama generated $630 million in revenue. However, in 2009, that revenue declined 24% - seems to me that if our effort was increasing exponentially, those revenues would be going up, not down. Fact is, the revenues are going down due to less effort due directly to the unnecessary draconian regulations by the NMFS itself.
We could have 6-8 month seasons and not even make a dent in the population, yet our Regional Administrator claims we will be lucky to have a 60 day season in 20 years. Yeah, right.
Time to pull the plug on this scam.
