Not that I ate at any of those places as it was, but apparently ALOT of people do

Darden Company fully supports Catch Shares:
Red Lobster, Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, Season’s 52, Bahama Breeze and Eddie V’s fall under their umbrella

And its much worse that simply supporting the Catch Share Scheme..... They have completely "Thrown Recreational Anglers Under the Bus"!!!!
Their proposal to decrease recreational allocations and give them to commercial fishermen is a slap in the face to all recreational anglers, and
no doubt tens of thousands of their own customers. I posted this on Dardens Red Lobster FB page and as you might expect it was quickly removed!

I won't eat at any Darden restaurants any longer.

I tried to submit the following to Red Lobster:

It has recently come to my attention that Red Lobster and It's parent company Darden supports catch shares in the fishery.

Therefore my family will not be dining at any of Darden's establishments in the future.
I will also do my best to spread the word about Darden's support of this affront to the recreational fisherman of this great nation.

Unfortunately something is wrong with their web site and it wouldn't take it.

I wouldn't eat at any of their chains, no matter what their position.

guess what guys, the unwashed masses don't care.

    Mr. Bing,

I noted with interest your letter of 25 June 2012 in support of catch share
management in the Gulf of Mexico
fishery which may be found at the following web link.

    http://shareholdersalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/Darden_CouncilTestimony.pdf

In your letter you describe your support and Darden restaurants support for a further review of recreational fishing practices and fish allocation.

I don't take lightly the battle for the ocean's protein resources that has
heated up over the past years, nor do I take lightly threats against
recreational fishing in the Gulf of Mexico such as those made within your
letter. My family and I can no longer patronize a restaurant within the
Darden group due to your restaurant groups apparent support of catch share and your written threat against recreational anglers.

There are other fisherman waking up as well. It is a small start, but we
will get the message out about your restaurant group.

I can only assume you planned for this and that we won't put too much of a
    "hole" in Darden's future revenues.

    Sincerely

Again most of the folks that eat in such low class chains don't really care.

It makes me nervous to think that people associated with Michael Milken or the Lehman Brothers are looking to commodify our fisheries through Catch Shares.

    http://www.opc.ca.gov/webmaster/ftp/pdf/public_comment/20110830_Helliwell_email_2_attachment_1_of_2.pdf

After all, just 6 months prior to this meeting where Mr. Festa is laying the Plan out, the Lehman Brothers filed the largest bankruptcy filing in U.S. history, with Lehman holding over $600 billion in assets. $600 BILLION. Financial services firm Lehman Brothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on September 15, 2008, and the meeting above took place in April 2009.

"My name is Larry Band. I’m the moderator today. I am a consultant for the Environmental Defense Fund where I’ve spent the last couple of months working with the ocean enterprise effort to think about financing for ocean fisheries.

Before that, I had the pleasure of spending 20 years on Wall Street, including 19-and-ahalf wonderful years at Lehman Brothers. So I bring some private-market perspective to this interesting issue of funding in fisheries."

    (Like that's a good thing?)

Michael Milkin - financier and convicted felon. He was indicted on 98 counts of racketeering and fraud in 1989. A plea bargain reduced the charge to six securities and reporting violations. He was sentenced to ten years in prison and made to pay $900 million in fines and settlements, but was released after less than two years. Milken was also banned for life from the securities industry.

And these people want to transform our currently free Public Trust Resource into tradeable commodities?

    Wow. Not a good idea.

  • Its funny how you have all these 'Different' Groups out there, yet the key players all seem to be one and the same. The
"Ocean Champions" bills itself as a Political action group that though a registered Non-Profit Organiation, solicits money
to campaign for or against those seeking office that does or does not fit their agenda. They are a leader in the
Anti-Southerland campaign. And yes, EDF clones are part of it, with David Festa a big player and board member.

Its not surprising their mantra and sales pitch sounds the same....IT IS! The latest about EDF really shows their true colors.
EDF is suppporting the opening of area's that have been previously closed to commercial fishing off Cape Cod. Recreational
groups and Pew support it being kept closed to commercial harvest, but EDF must be catering to the Catch Share fishery
that would profit from it, in its support! Again, its all about "grren' ($$$$$$$).

I just fired a message to Darden. Done dining there as long as they hold their position.

Got a somewhat "patronizing" response back from Darden.

Not much of a response in terms of the complicated factors that surround their support for "improved data collection and monitoring" in the recreational....sector, such as VMS for head boats and federally permitted charter boats and 'recreational' ifq to go along with them.

how should i respond? Can't tell but it reads like EDF is writing letters for the guy or he is refreshingly clueless as to the implications of what "improved data collection and monitoring" in the recreational sector would actually mean in terms of NOAA's approved actions.

Subject: US Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management

Thank you for taking the time to contact us and share your concerns regarding our comments to the U.S. Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management. We understand this issue is important to you and we appreciate the opportunity to better clarify our position.

Darden is committed to the long-term sustainability of the Gulf of Mexico fishery for the benefit of commercial fisherman, recreational fishermen like yourself, and the millions of Gulf shore residents. Contrary to some reports, we did not support taking quota from recreational fishermen and giving it to commercial fishermen. We do support improved data collection and monitoring in both the recreational and commercial fishing sectors. We believe it is in the best of interest of all fishermen to support the monitoring of Gulf fisheries to help reduce the level of uncertainty, strengthen management, improve ocean health and enable recreational and commercial fishing to continue now and into the future.

We are also taking steps to be a good partner in the Gulf. Darden recently launched its first Fishery Improvement Project in the Gulf of Mexico with Publix Super Markets and the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership. The FIP is designed to improve data collection and monitoring in the commercial snapper and grouper fisheries in the Gulf. Our collective goal is to bring fishermen, wholesalers, distributors, buyers, and other fishery stakeholders together to improve the long-term condition of the Gulf fishery.

We support the efforts of all fishermen to have access to the Gulf of Mexico fishery. We also recognize that with shared ownership comes shared responsibility and believe that improved data collection will make all of us better stewards of this ecosystem.

Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to clarify our statements. We hope to have the opportunity to serve you in one of our restaurants again soon.

    Sincerely,

    xxxxx

    Manager of Sustainability

The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership was founded by James Cannon and he is the CEO today. He is directly tied to EDF, and your suspicions are correct.

All the usual suspects from private foundations, Gordon & Betty Moore Fund, David & Lucile Packard Foundation and Walton Foundation Cannon has advised Walmart since 2004, which basically means he was on the EDF dole. The link below shows all of the connections and some of the plans for the future:

Darden is likely a victim of the heavy "social change" pressures brought to bear by the 501 (3) (c) organizations and just like Jessie Jackson will hold up major corporations for large donations to his Rainbow Push Coalition, these groups will continue to hold up the large chains for money and support, or they risk falling out of favor (and ultimately out of business).

Hopefully these folks will wake up, see what is happening and put an end to this. The best thing that educated consumers can do is exactly what you are doing e.g. write them, call them and refuse to support them.

Of course they will say that they are looking out for everyone's best interest.
But as we all know when it comes to someone or entities that rely on profit from a public resource........well you know how that story ends

EDF, Darden, Wal-mart, Hewlett Packard etc etc, it boils down to control and profit. And with more of the pie (IE take from the family man) so goes their profits/agenda's

I emailed them and they sent me back a song and a dance. Basically saying that they are just trying to protect the future of the fisheries for everyone to enjoy and that they look forward to serving me in one or more of their fine restaurants again soon.

Has anyone ever looked into Bonefish Grill and who they are "partnered" with?
