U need some help with repro stuff let me know...

The big benefit with buying a str from a fair is, first you don't have to feed it everyday, second you help a kid out, third they will take care of all the butchering, cutting and wrapping, no trying to get a trailer, finding someone to do it right or all that mess. Just raise your hand, cut the check and tell them how you want it. Also a good advertisement if you happen to be a business owner.

Thanks. Got it covered I think except the fornix gets me sometimes. I know how to handle that now though.

So, anyone want to go in on a cow with me?
I really only want about 1/4 so I can see what the taste is like.

Seriously, if anyone wants to, let me know. Otherwise I will be waiting for the local 4H or FFA and finding someone local to go in with me.

FYI.... A LOT of grass fed, grass finished, antibiotic free beef comes into this country from Australia at a reasonable price.

All your US beef is antibiotic free, hence withdrawl times and USDA inspectors.

You might want to try Whole Foods, I think they carry some grass fed beef.

Nothin like trying to support your local business and ranchers there jb.
  • hooknlinehooknline Posts: 5,523 Admiral
I support them fully.... I am in the wholesale meat business.... But true antibiotic free, grass fed beef is not that easy to find in a domestic product. And when you find it, it is very expensive.

I was just offering an option that is out there.
If you can't find natural raised beef in florida your not looking very hard. Florida is a hold out of sorts. Last to vaccinate, only treat with antibiotics when necc, not many doing artificial insemination, etc as it compares to the rest of the country.
Plenty of natural raised beef out there. Just have to open your eyes and look. I'd bet that 90% of 4h steers have never seen antibiotics.

I'll bet you the $20 it costs to buy a grass fed, free ranged, chemical free ribeye at the Stuart Green Market this Sunday :)

I have been involved with 4H and FFA steers for about 30 years, give or take.... I don't remember one that never got a shot of antibiotic for something.

Those animals sure got sick alot then. I've only ever had to give antibiotics to 1 animal, and that was a calf that got brd after a hard pull. I wonder who was advising those kids that the animals got sick that often

mine are 100% grass steers. 1000 lbs in 20 mos. no growth hormones or antibiotics ever..if they get any for any reason we load em. i rarely use fl;yspray. draggin and mowin keeps them to a min.
i was getting 3$/lb on the rail. id have to make an adj to the price now tho. the mrkt been so good we been sellin em there. lot less work.
as for the taste. our animals have alot of fat on em. i think i mentioned the beefmasters finish out alot better than the angus we have. i cant find the steak pics i got..maybe hook can help me out. theyre on the cattle forum somewhere. they taste diff for sure. we like it better than reg store bought. not for everyone but i will say that ours really isnt hat much diff than store bought. not as bad a some producers that sell grass finished...some is downright rank. ours is very tame. altho i do use citrus pellets daily ration since i sell them.

And I know 8 different producers within 20 minutes drive that operate the same way.
Like I said not too hard to find a producer that raises beef any which way you want.
