Question for the cattle guys.

Recently started eating grass fed beef. Digests & tastes better but costs mucho dinero! Is there a place to buy in bulk with out having to buy the whole cow?

Ground beef is $6.99lb & steak are $16.99lb where I'm getting them. Any info is appreciated. :USA

All beef is grass fed. But grass finished takes almost 2 years. Grain finished only takes about 12-14 months in most cases.
Best bet is a local cattle producer

    this^

what is "finished" & why do they sell "grass fed" at a higher price if they are all grass fed then.

my understanding was grains are used to make bigger beefier cows at a faster rate, correct?

Yeah but the difference is that the grass fed cattle are not sent to those feedlots to be fattened up, loaded with antibiotics, antacid, and other medications. They finish them on the grass and it takes a lot longer for them to build the same mass as the ones who are gorging themselves on corn and protein powder.

A little slower this time: all beef eats grass and hay. Some get grain from as early as 2 months. The term finish refers to how they are fattened for slaughter. Grain finished can take a 900 lb steer to 1200 lbs in 90 days at roughly 12-14 months old depending on breed and genetics.
That same animal that never sees grain will be anywhere from 16-24 months old when it has the same level of "finish" or fat cover on its body. If an animal never gets vaccinated or wormed or has to be treated with antibiotics it can be marketed as "natural" raised or with extreme rules organic but they can also be grain finished.
Antibiotics or vaccinations rule out natural and organic classed beef. Grain will not rule out natural or organic classification. Antibiotics aren't always bad, and neither are beef vaccinations.
So in short it depends on what a person wants in their beef.

thank you for clearing that up.

would you know a local producer down this way?

I don't. But you can call the florida cattlemans association and they can tell you who sells freezer beef by the quarter or by the side. Sounds to me like you want grass "finished" natural raised beef. Make sure you ask them who produces beef that way that they can reccomend. If they can't or won't let me know and I can find someone who does

White oaks prices are high if you ask me. Just my opinion. 350.00 for 1/8 cow(56lbs)

The only place i've seen it is at the whole foods store on pines. And that place is Expensive. I've been asking myself the same question. Maybe a couple of us down this way can go in on a cow. Rrggbbtt has some boys that get some cows from out of the marshes they seem grass fed.Maybe he's got something.

Delaware chicken farms is carrying it now & they beat Whole Foods by a buck or so. Most of their meats are not frozen & they don't use antibiotics or hormones.

There is a fine young lady that sells those grass fed okeechobee steaks at the Stuart Green Market on Sundays. I had to buy one just because she was nice to look at lol

  • My advice would be to forget about "grass fed" beef. I find the flavor and marbling of grass and grain fed beef to be much better. Grass fed is just a marketing tool to charge you a lot more money.

The key thing is, if you want to avoid the feed lot cattle and everything associated with it, is to look for a good small local producer or rancher.

Even better, and we've discussed this several times, is to purchase a steer from your loacal 4H or FFA which you can do at your local fair. Hands down that is the best beef you can buy, anywhere. Not only is it the best beef you can buy, you're supporting and excellent cause. Win win.

My buddy bought a whole cow from the South FL fair for like 2k . He gave a lot away because he couldn't eat it all within a year. Had a bunch of BBQ's at friends houses

  • The animals raised by FFA or 4H kids usually have to weigh 1000 lbs on the hoof to go to auction and can weigh up to 1600 lbs on average, sometimes more.

I've seen them go as low as $1.25 per lb, which is giving it away. $2.00 to $3.00 a lb is break even, to cover the cost of feed, on average and really doesn't compensate the youngster for their time.

And the prices TTT said are live weight prices. On the hoof

Another factor to keep in mind if you plan to but a live animal and have it slaughtered is that the dressing percentage for cattle is ~55-60%, which means that if you have a 1000 lb live weight animal you would end up with about 550-600 lb carcass to be processed into what ever cuts you want.

So called organic,,, green or grassfed beef is also a marketing ploy. Very over rated... but if you feel the need to pay the extra $$$ for it ,..to each their own.

I pick my families beef from my herd,,, put them aside so that they can be watched and cared for more closely and feed them a high quality grain, hay and sweet feed mix for the last 45 to 60 days.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a chest freezer, so I've got to ask this question ...

From a 1,000lb cow, how many pounds of ribeyes/t-bones and NY Strips does that yield?

    Fins,
Let me preface, I am no stranger to good beef, all the usual joints, all I buy anymore is costco USDA Prime. Sixteen years working in kitchens, Chef etc etc. Why is the beef in Argentina so much more flavorful?
