Looking to buy a down rigger any suggestions or recommendations? Manual vs electric? Also the type of mounts available, permanent or rod holder etc. Any input appreciated. Thanks in advance
email me at [email protected] ..... I have 2 Very good condition Scotty Electric downriggers with all mounts and extra parts. I was going to post them on the for sale board. I haven't mastered the picture thing yet but I can email you pics and talk price if you are interested.
I used them almost exclusively to pull my spreader bars so they are in great shape. They are both spooled with 300lb braid.
Personally, we use Cannon downriggers. They have been absolutely put through abuse and have not let us down yet. One is the original my father purchased in 1989 and our second is from 04 and both are manual. Ours are on non-swivel mounts that are bolted on our transom but swivel mounts allow more variation in placement on the boat. I'm actually looking to upgrade to the tournament series with the stainless steel boom and spool.
I have a manual Canon on a swivel mount. Honestly have not used it a ton, but know I would not want it without the swivel mount. it is manual for a few reasons price, weight, ease of maintenance, I would rather turn a handle than have to work on keeping electronic components working In a saltwater environment. I typically slow troll live baits on it about 50 ft down and bringing it up only takes a few seconds, probably faster than electric. Plus I know when the electric would fail, when that 10# weight is down 75 ft and good luck getting it back up, in the middle of fighting the biggest wahoo I have ever seen....that is just how my luck goes..
I also like that with the swivel mount I can easily remove the down rigger and not have a whole lot left on the boat. Rod holder mount would do the same, just not crazy about putting that kind of constant pressure on a rod holder..
Thanks everyone for your input and info. I think you have a point about the constant pressure on the rod holder, had not thought of that but it makes sense.
Thanks CATastrophe for letting me know about the Scotty Electric Down riggers you have for sale but I think as a first timer I might have to go with the manual down rigger.
