Rule states they need passport. In reality, the Bahamian customs officer can decide to make an exception with birth cert. Technically, there are no exceptions upon return to u.s.

A rush renewal can be done for the passport at some locations.

Call the Miami passport office. Make an appointment. Get fresh pictures at Walgreen or alike. Spend the day waiting. Get new one that day. Be advised that they get real squirly about only one partent trying to update paper work for a quick trip. Both Parents need to be there to make things go smoother. (If not possible you may need a noterized letter or alike from Mom.)

They also want proof of travel on short notice like tickets. I was crossing over and got a letter from the Boat Captain with vessel name and travel plans. They accepted it.

Airline won't even let you on the plane without a valid passport, no exceptions. If you are going by boat, you might be able to pull it off by showing the expired passport, and take the birth certificate. There's a 50/50 chance the Bahamian immigration officer doesn't even notice it's expired, and I seriously doubt they turn away a 13 year old with a group of adults. But the best advice is to renew it...

The Bahama's except birth cert. its coming back to USA that requires passport.

    Steve,
My kids are 12/15 and have been going to the islands for 9 years and there has NEVER been an issue, word said or otherwise. Just brought birth certificate and that was it, cleared in Bimini N and S, Cat, WE, Spanish, Treasure. Our last trip, first of August, Immigration was NOT going to let them in, I was begging, pleading, showing them my passport with 30 stamps, still wasn't going to happen. Finally, she called her boss, looked at my last clearing and the only reason they let them in was because it was his stamp # on the last trip, he cleared me so he gave me a break but that is it. I just got their passports in the mail last week, took 3 weeks without any expediting. Govern yourself accordingly.

BTW, coming back is not a problem, my kids have had a local boaters card for years and they got that without a passport

That is almost a joke in itself.

ANother thing to remember is that because the kids are under 18 you can't order a passport on-line you have to go to a local passport office in person with the kid(s) and YOUR WIFE!!! Yes both of you need to show up!
