And then what? Flood the job market with hundreds of thousands of un-employed GI's? THis is not the time for knee jerk reactions. I am all about decreasing the defense budget but there is a right time for everytime.

We can decrease the budget by 85B just by leaving Afghanistan.

Put them to work in America with the same money.

One example. Tear down failing infrastructure and rebuild (sewers, water lines, bridges, roads, etc). Where appropriate, say Florida, use the fallen infrastructure to build an unprecedented number of artificial reefs. I read today in the "Environmental Monitor" that for every 1$ spent on reefs in Florida, the community reaped 138$ in tourist/fisherman dollars.

Well at least you are half right...

We need to reign in our military foot print and live within a peace time budget of about 500 Billion a year for Defense spending and less than 100 Billion for Military spending
    But
We do not need to grow wasteful entitlement spending, we need to reign them in as well, reducing the size of the safety net for SHORT TERM assistance, to get people on their feet and productive.

I think 350 to 400 billion should suffice....(that's 1100 for every man woman and child in the US) so if we can get to less than 30% needing assistance that is nearly $5000 per welfare recipient per year or for a family of 4 20,000 in assistance....more than enough aid to jump start someone on the road to success.

Please name a single social service program that has worked...
Please provide the metric for determining its success and how long it took for it to reach that metric.

I agree with Cyclist, the defense department's budget should be cut. I also think all federal programs including entitlements should be cut. A good starting point would be 10% cut to the entire budget, no exception. During these rather tough times my budget has been cut by the owner of the company for which I work. In fact my budget was cut by 3 million dollars in fiscal year 2010 and it was tough and we had to do the same work with a lot less bucks. While my budget has not been cut again, there has been no increases in the departmental budget for the last two years either.

It only in government where a planned increase is reduced and declared a cut. I hear Congress Critters of both parties declaring a 10% cut in a program when in fact the budget is actually increasing but at a reduced rate of 10%. Please note that in government speak "savings" are always over a 5-10 year period. This is done so the lying bastards can't be called out in the short term for not living up to their promises. The politicans know the public has a short attention span and won't remember thier lies.

The Ron Paul approach to military budgeting:
Cut wasteful "military" spending, not defense spending.
The majority of military spending is spent overseas and has nothing to do with actual funding for the nations defense.

Seems about right to me, it is time that America step down from being the biggest, most advanced military in the world. We should take a vote. based upon political leanings.

Who do you think should have the biggest and most Advanced Military other than the US.

When you have people that believe we should be the protector of the world, provider for the world, and do both of these when we are broke - what do you expect. Of course we should also do this without one single reference to the Constitution.

Would the percentage of the GDP be so high if we had a thriving economy? I think not. Another lesson is manipulated statistics.

It will under Romney, his goal is 4% of GDP regardless of how much that is money wise.

Without our military we would not be speaking English, by now we would be speaking German, Japanese, Russian, maybe Chinese.

Yes Libs if we let the other guys run around unchecked, like Germany they would eventually have taken over Europe and then once they were firmly in control of the EU came and took the USA, without our allies we might have been overrun By Germany.

We need a strong military and we occassionally must help our friends, yes we should be doing less and I am totally against rebuilding these mideast countries, but I might be for blowing up Iran and then let them fix themselves.

Not a snowballs chance in hell...

We have a strong Military to protect ourselves, the rest not our problem. If they want help, they can fund it, we are broke.

We spend more on our military and military arms than the the largest others combined.

Then we give the arms away to "ally's" only to have our troops killed by them when they are no longer our "ally's".

We aren't speaking English now! We have been invaded by Spanish speakers and they are winning.

you do know that a sub that costs us 2.1 billion dollars cost the Chinese or the Russians less then 105 of that because they say what it will cost.

China did not build a huge underground sub base and bore through the mountains to the seas for a mere penny you know, only a complete idiot would think we are talking dollar for dollar value

I'm all for cutting military spending as long as that means the $$$ saved stay in the taxpayers wallets and not re-appropriated to more welfare handouts

He has? Has he lied us into invading a country in a pre-emptive strike that will cost us over a trillion dollars and countless lives and injuries?

Just who are we still "defending" Germany, Japan, and South Korea from?

How much longer will those freeloading deadbeats need US troops?

There ought to be at least a $1000 "defense tax" on every BMW, Honda/Toyota, and Hyundai
    imported into the USA.
