Key West Shore Fishing Advice??

Taking a very quick trip to Key West and dont have time to take the boat and the little one will be with us so we will not be doing a charter this year. My 9 year old is crazy to do a little fishing from shore. Any advice on areas/tactics etc to hook a few fish while we are there. We dont really care what kind as we will most likely catch and release regardless. Locations/Bait/Lures/Tides etc would all be helpful. We are looking to keep it simple and dont care if we just pull on some jacks or whatever. Any bridge areas/beach areas that anyone could recommend. Details are appreciated. We will just be brining a couple light spinners. Thanks for any advice. I will be longing for a trip to the Marquesas but its not in the cards this year lol.:banghead

No offense, save the hassle of dealing with swimmers, bridges etc.

Pay the $35 and hop on a party/drift boat. Your 9 yr old will LOVE it and you'll catch plenty of fish (hopefully snapper for dinner)

I am not sure of Key west, but I see a lot of boy scouts fishing from the bridge between Summerland and Cudjoe key. May be cool for him to be around some other kids, and the scouts are always friendly and may have some tips. A couple of the leaders at the camp frequent this board, and are really nice guys.

Another consideration, would be to take your son on a headboat trip. Much cheaper than a charter and they get on some fish.
I have heard some good things about Gulfsream. $65/person

Thanks for the input guys. I dont want to do a headboat for a couple reasons, the first is we are limited on time and i dont want to be gone 6 or 7 hours. I am looking for a quick 2 hour getaway even if we just catch some jacks or whatever. We just want to run quickly and fish while the little guy is napping or after he goes to bed. I will check out the bridge when we are coming in, might be able to catch some little snapper or whatever there?
Anyone ever fish the breakwall at Ft. Zachary? Seems like a pretty fishy spot with some current. seems like you see mangroves everywhere down there around the sea walls, just trying to think of anywhere like that you could drop a line for an hour or so.

Give Mallory Square a try at night or when the big boats aren't in. Lots of fish and lots of variety

We are staying right at Mallory Square and i was curious about that. I always see snapper/tarpon etc all around the seawalls and docks there. Are you allowed to fish down there? We are staying at the Westin which has a marina, i wonder if they would hassel us if we threw some plugs there at night considering we are guests there?

My favorite captain in Key West is Dan Zeir on the Second Nature. He always catches fish and loves to have kids on board. He runs out Garrison Bight. Give him a call. http://fishinkeys.com/
