Also, even before you jump into actual development, you really should get started on the architecture side of things first. ESPECIALLY learning database development and design because most of today's development starts there and the application tier follows.
This is n-Tier architecture and is well established as an effective design --- again, much of this starts with database work first because you model business entities in the application from the actual database objects (tables, stored proc's, etc...). I'd recommned you really start with learning SQL Server, then worry about the .NET development.
This is a great series on creating ASP.NET applications. Use this in conjunction with n-Tier architecture and you have the building blocks for creating web-based software that can be distributed as services.
thank you
will be learning vb .net for web applications that utilize esri arcgis data and a sql server database
Cool. Let me know if there are specific questions you need answered -- integrating ArcGIS (spatial) and SQLServer (non-spatial) databases with .NET technologies is my specialty. Actually, I just got published in the Spring edition of ESRI's ArcNews for some of my previous work:

kudos
and if it is not too much of a bother as i jump in, i will take you up on that
again thank you very much
Please do. I have tons of links for you to follow up --- again, you need to formulate a specific objective and scope for an application as there is just so much info that you need to be precise on how you approach the information. Otherwise you will spend years just trying to learn.
Also use the ESRI support forums for specific GIS questions. Lots of excellent developers and examples there too:
the forums have been a great resource so far for python, and i'm sure will be for .net as well
the esri community as a whole is very giving
Awesome developers over there. I mostly post in the ArcObjects -- All Development Languages forum (same username: jamesfreddyc). I also have a couple of downloadable .NET assemblies on the ArcScripts portion (it used to be called that, not sure what it is now though).
Much of what you will run into is written in C#, but I have found it to be easy to convert to VB if that is what you are comfortable writting (that's what I write). I just never really made the leap into full C# as I don't have the time right now to spend making that switch.

Everything you could ever want to know or need to teach yourself is there, but ".NET" consists of so many things:
What language (VB, C#)? What technologies (WindowsForms, ASP.NET, WPF, WCF, etc..)?
There is just so much you really need to narrow down exactly what you wish to accomplish.
