Help! Heat Pump Went Out

CalusaCalusa Posts: 11,874 AG
Today my daughter had a 3 second power outage/surge (lost power) and now the AC compressor isn't working. 3 1/2 year old Ruud heatpump. My son in law checked it out tonight looking for a reset switch or something but couldn't see one. He said the motor that drives the fan felt hot. Any idea what a happening?

Yes - my SIL just called me and that's what a neighbor advised. Cheap part, and it's under P&L warrantee for another 2 years.

Give the fan a little assist and it may take off.

Is anything working? Inside fan? Is the outside unit even attempting to come on, or making any noise?

If the compressor ain't working at all (not even to start with) then what would spinning the fan do? If the compressor works but shuts off when it overheats(pressure) you can spray a waterhose on the whole unit, making sure the coils get a lot and the compressor gets some too.
May void your warranty but you can get the house temp down.

If it's not a fuse/breaker or a blown cap, I'm thinking one leg of 120v might be out. I've seen it happen plenty. If she has an electric stove, is it working? Or are there any electric outlets out in the house?

had exactly that on my pool setup last weekend. One leg of one of the 3 breakers in line was shot.

All other electric in the house is working. However, my SIL used his pekker to spin the fan and now he's in surgery to get a reattachment, and my daughter is freaking out. About not having air tonight .....

Ok...is the inside unit blowing air? Is outside unit making any noises, or attempting to come on?

If a leg to the unit is off like mine was the rest of the house will work.

Sorry about your sister in law's pekker.

Yes, the air handler is blowing air, but the outside unit isn't making a sound.

And Tater, SIL ain't a woman! Women don't have pekkers, at least not naturally. That sign is hilarious!

If it's making noise, then it sounds like the compressor is going off on overload (unless it's a different sound you're talking about). Most likely a blown cap, or a fried fan motor. Cap is cheapest, but if the motor, it's not expensive if you change it yourself.

I was going to say that's weird since different stuff will be ran off each/both legs, but it sounds like your bad breaker was a dedicated breaker for your pool now that I re-read your other post

Well, as my SIL explained it to me, it's still under a 5 year part & labor warranty. He's calling the outfit that he bought it from to come out and fix it. All should be well by tomorrow, I assume.

Blown start capacitor. Prolly has a gecko glued to it.

Compressors/fans, et al, don't normally go out, in that short of time...

Hopefully the A/C company will repair it under warranty, but I'm thinking if it's a cap, they might not cover it. That's almost like the brakes going wearing out on your car. This Florida heat does a number on caps.

Yep, you knucklehead. THere's a breaker in the pane in the house. It goes to this panel on the other end of the house nearer the pool. I think it previously ran the pump and timer until they put a heater in. Now that breaker continued the feed to 2 more panels with breakers for the pump, heatpump and salt/chlorine get up.
I've already had to replace breakers in the both other ends.

I've actually seen a dropped leg more often on the pole side of the supply than on the house side

I had a corroded wire going to my capacitor burn thru and cut power to the compressor. My unit is 7 years old though. Just a thought...
