2-28 pompano by the pounds

With yesterday being a crappy windy day I was thinking today was going to be the same, woke up early and looked outside and it was beautiful with no wind! Put the rods in the boat and took off to sandsprint. First thing went out the inlet and went north but it was just a lil to wavy for me so I turned around and decided to jig for pompano around sailfish point. Few casts got hit, ran, and then came off. Few more cast and landed a nice 3-4 pounder pompano and in the dinner chest it went. Few more casts a few more pompano but all just legal sizes and tossed them back. After about 7 small pompano ended up catching another 3 pounder and in the dinner chest it went too. The rain started to threaten the area so I made a few more cast and a few more smaller pompano and let them go then it rained for about 45min and sought shelter under a dock till the rain made a break. Called it a day around noon. This was by far one of the better days this year for the pompano. There was 2 other boats in the area catching a quite a few pompano as well.

nice work, I am hoping to try my luck there tomorrow. What was the tide and if you don't mind sharing what color/make of jig were you throwing?

last year was better. this season has sucked but first time some decent sized and in numbers ive caught. got out at the very end of outgoing to the first 2 hours of incoming followed by the heavy rain. I was using a variety of colors.

Nice score. Thanks for the report.

We have roughly 25 pompano dinners (for 2) vacuum sealed for the off season, so I'm probably focusing mostly offshore until we're stocked on cobia and dolphin fillets again.

Please keep the pomp reports coming in case we get blown out with the March winds. :beer

I have had no luck for them so far this year. Granted, I only try for them locally on the beach or pier but have not caught one. Congrats on catching some very respectable fish! Maybe the spring run will produce some more?

I have to admit it took some work and different colors to get them all. Chart/ pink did well at first then no bites for a few casts, switches to pink/pink and the bites were good then turned off, went to yellow/pink and got a few on and one of my keepers, switched back to chart/pink and got my other big keeper. I was surprised how many I got and only one trash fish out of the whole time I was out. The small ones were just not fat enough like these 2 bigger ones are. My guess a different group of Pompano from another region? Last year Pompano were so much plumper and in greater numbers. Will need to see what the beach pomps look like compared to these ones traveling inshore are.

Good report, glad you got 'em. I live in the area, too, and have virtually quite on them this year. Did okay in November. this is the other side of the
    season now.

I love these fish, my favorite around here, and I wrote about the species and the latest thinking on their movements in the March issue of FS.
Called "Pompano Unhooked." Check it out, and let me know what you think. You might have valuable info for the next story.

Great thread. I worked the area along the house of Refuge area hard yesterday afternoon to stay out of the strong SE wind for a few hours with nothing but relentless lady fish after lady fish. I did see some small pomps skipping in the area, but I was not able to connect with any of them. Threw 3/8 oz goofy jigs in pink/white and yellow/pink to no avail. The tide was out going about half way out before low tide.

I never use that much weight. You just want enough to keep it on the bottom as much as possible but not so much weight where its like an anchor, just the right amount with the current and depth in mind. I was throwing 1/4 oz does jigs all if not every time. Fish channel edges and sandy/shelly areas and where theres grass. The pomps are here but you just have to find the right area where they funnel in or out. It's taken me 10 years to try and figure out pompano patterns. I'm close but they are there today gone tomorrow so its a never ending hide and seek with these fish.
