Threw on C span several times among many other boats Sunday morning and noone was pulling up threads.

Went to Tarpon Bay flats and chummed for quite a while and had to work hard for a couple dozen big pinfish. Thats with throwing a 10ft heavy net wide open. No pilchards or threads. Watched the other guys on the flats throwing as well and they didnt seem to bring up any bait. Got reports from a friend who said bait was hard to come by right now but a captain friend told me he has done well up north in PI sound.

Hope the rest of you guys are doing better.

Have had luck at tarpon bay last few times chumming but Sunday just seemed like the threads weren't there. Going to try boca grande this weekend. Any tips on places to find bait up there?

This past week, I blacked out the well with 5" threads INSIDE the river, between Redfish cove and the CC Yacht Club. I haven't done that in nearly 15 years. This drought is killing my lawn, but the fishing in the river is great.

We went up to Bokelia today to get over to Boca Grand faster after launching. No bait (pins or crabs) at any shops in Matlacha or Pine Island. Tried chumming the grass flats off Bokelia and got a few pins and maybe 4 threads...... didn't see anyone doing much better and there were 6-10 other boats out there all trying it.
Did pick up some decent threads later just running the channel north of Bokelia and came upon a couple pods.

Any thread fins around the area??? Sanibel Causeway???

On Saturday, hit the A span of the Sanibel Causeway on the morning outgoing tide and Christmas treed a 3/8th inch net badly. Between there and the tripod, a couple of pods of Tarpon were busting the same baits.

Massive schools of cigar minnows from 30' and deeper off of Sarasota. Found 4" white bait in 20' off Sarasota as well. Blacked out the livewell with two throws of my deep water cast net.

    Hi All,

wondering if anyone in the sarasota has some suggestions to catch pin fish or blue runners during this red tide bloom. Are people heading further offshore to catch their bait?

If you get yourself onto a grass flat you can chum them, use clumps of chum instead of smaller sprinkles. I even mix in some cheap catfood, something fleshy or meaty will get them going nuts. That's if you are throwing a net. If you can't or don't have a net you can cut small pieces of squid and put the pieces onto the hooks of a sabiki rig and catch them that way too.

Clear water and tons of small baitfish all over the flats south of Useppa yesterday.  Look for the pelicans diving

I'm not in SRQ but near me (Englewood/Charlotte Harbor) there's whitebait absolutely everywhere.
Tarpon... everything else is just bait.

The last few mornings I've crossed the Cape Coral Bridge,  the smooth glass-like river revealed circular areas of disturbances, presumably bait, though I cannot tell the size.  I noticed at least half a dozen areas on the south side of the bridge alone, mostly toward the Fort Myers side.

Spent a week in boca grande June 4-11. Don’t think I’ve ever worked so hard for bait.

Found them at devilfish key, bulls bay and Gasparilla sound. Near three sisters and also near the trestle. No real pattern. Some early in the morning. Some later in the day. Half the time I chummed sometimes chum didn’t work. Sometimes I just drifted and saw them and cast netted them.

Later in the week it was clear that’s the pelicans were the giveaway. Where they were diving was where the bait was.

There were 2 types of whitebait. Threadfins and scaled sardines. Threads you could see on the water. Looked like raindrops. These were smaller. More of a metallic green. Not very hearty. Would die after a few hours in the livewell.

Scaled sardines were bigger, heartier. More dark brown than green. They were usually beneath the threadfins.

On 2 occasions I just chummed and chummed and never saw anything but just cast netted anyway and got the scaled sardines. Snook preferred the scaled sardines 2-1. My guess is because they were much more livelier and active. They lasted all day in the livewell. When the threadfins would all die the scale sardines were left behind which made for some great predusk bites.

For chum I did use boca coast chum. Not sure if it’s any better than making my own but it’s a lot cleaner. No mennaden oil.
