Anyone play with metal detectors?

I have always wanted to get one but every time I look into it I get freaked out about how many there are out there..I don't want junk but also don't want to drop a truck load of $$ on one. I am on the beach surf fishing 2-3 times a week so it will get used a good bit.
Any advise from anyone?

@t..small[/email] coins, nails and such. It was fun, but not productive for me.
The one time it really came in handy we were with friends on Gulf Shores and at the time it was illegal to metal detect. Our friend lost her wedding ring and couldn't find it, I talked to the ranger and he let me look for it with the detector, found it after about 15 minutes.

a show on the Treasure Coast down here had some guys saying that out on the beaches around Ft Pierce they would find something from the old ship wrecks nearly every trip after a storm.
I'd love to find meteors like the meteorite men do but I'd guess they don't last long in a corrosive environment.

I am going to get one for sure. Just to screw around with. Just got to dig in and do some research. Don't want junk but don't want overkill ether.
I will ck out that forum and snoop around. So many different features. I need to figure out what I need and what I don't.

I don't really mess with them (yet), but there's always been one in the house since as early as I can remember. Lyly the GF has been wanting to get into it (I bought her a cheapie a while back, but didn't use it much since it was a cheapie, and didn't pickup stuff too good). She's done lots of reading and asking, and aside from the fully underwater units (like diving underwater), the Garrett AT Pro is one of the best all around units out there. It works good over all types of soil and sand/beach, has good pickup sensing, and the coil is waterproof too, so you can use it in a couple of feet of water if'n you want. You can pickup the unit and some decent accessories for around $600 or so. She wants to get the AT Pro once he gets the $ together for it.

I would suggest the White's Dual Field PI. I have the Garrett AT PRO, but it doesnt go too deep in the ocean (after the ground balancing).

PS If you join that site, tell the sponsors you are a member and it will save you hundreds of dollars from their advertised prices on detectors. Go from one sponsor to another and play each one against the other saying this one said this much, can you beat it. They will keep dropping the prices.

My next door neighbor is into it. According to him White makes the best ones and he says if you go cheap you won't find much. He goes right behind people with crappy machines and finds stuff they went just over. He's had some good scores that produced nice cash for him. One chain and crucifix last year that brought $1500 from the gold buyer.

Pup, if your detector shoes are secured by velcro, the age thingy can be waived. Just sayin'...
