Score one for laws against stupidity.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Four protesters, including the spokesman of Occupy Charlotte, were charged after setting fire to two American flags early Friday near the Occupy camp in Center City, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police weren't sure earlier if the four men who set fire to two flags were associated with the Occupy Charlotte movement.

But, WBTV has learned that one of the men is the media spokesman for the Occupy group and has been the contact person listed on press releases from Occupy Charlotte.

The fires happened with in feet of the group's encampment.

Earlier reports indicated one flag was burned, but a police report says that 2 US flags were burned.

Officers said they noticed the suspects lighting something on fire directly in front of the Occupy camp along Trade Street around 12:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Police swarmed the area, and detained the men while firefighters were called in to knock down the flames. About $30 worth of damage was caused to landscaping at the site.

It was only after the fire was out did officials figure out what was burning, the American flag.

Police said the men claimed they were burning the flag in protest. Burning the flag is not illegal, however doing it outside of a fire pit, and within ten feet from flammable tents poses a problem.

Officers arrested 20-year-old Stephen Christopher Morris of Matthews, 28-year-old Jason Bargert of Charlotte, 23-year-old Michael Alan Behrle of Matthews and 19-year-old Alex Macon Tyler of Fort Mill.

Bargert is the media spokesman for Occupy Charlotte and in earlier media reports said he had been with the group since "the beginning."

All four men were charged with being careless with fire. That charge is a misdemeanor under the city ordnance.

Police officers told WBTV the protesters gave them a verbal tongue-lashing while being detained, calling then fascists, as well as using other colorful words.

Crime Scene Investigators collected the remains of the flag, and placed it into evidence. A cigarette lighter was also confiscated.

I wish they were thrown in a prison cell for the night along with the knowledge to all in the cell with them what they had done.

Im ok with burning the American flag as long as you wrap yourself in it first.

Don't they know that only the Boy Scouts and VFW are allowed to retire a flag?

From the article.... "Burning the flag is not illegal, however doing it outside of a fire pit, and within ten feet from flammable tents poses a problem."

I would never burn an American flag but I will always support one's freedom of speech. I sort of figured most of you would too. Every time this subject comes up it makes me wonder when the flag becomes sacred. Is it when the Malaysian 12 year old finishes sewing it? Is it when it's aboard the foreign flagged cargo ship? Is it while on the shelf of your local Walmart? When does it become sacred?

Not until it is displayed as a flag.

Once used, it should be properly retired.
I have a drawer full of flags to be retired by my Boy Scout troop. We do a retirement ceremony about once a month, sometimes more than 1 flag is retired at a time.

Burning the flag is more of a statement of intent than an illegal act. If you hate your country enough to actually burn its flag in public then you have made a statement regarding your feelings about living in this country and you should leave of your own free will.

Honestly, if you burn our flag, my flag, you can GTFO, the door is open... or, if not, ****.

    Period.

If you hate your country enough to actually hope evil befalls her for petty political points, then you have made a statement regarding your feelings about living in this country and you should leave of your own free will.
