Middle Aucilla

GlennGlenn Posts: 1,849 Captain
I’m never one to ask for pointers or help, but I’m doing it anyway.

My oldest son picked up a Middle Aucilla WMA Spring Turkey permit. This permit is good for the entire season.

I’ve been through the area thousands of time and never hunted it. Pretty small tract and scenic.

Got a feeling that the birds could be anywhere along the river or the fence line on private property.

Taking him tomorrow to see if we can get him his 2nd bird for the year (he got one during the youth weekend).

Can private message me…I’ll return the favor for other areas.

thanks!

Never been there but sounds like your gonna hunt it like I would as well.
Them birds love the Bottoms as you know... take 2 hard days and you'll have a bird.

I agree TRT and I love those bottomlands. I guess we will go and listen in the morning and see what happens. If nothing else the rapids should be going good and will make for good photos/ videos.

Just wanted to see if anyone has hunted it.

My son had it for Archery last year b ut never got to hunt it due to being moved for work. He had cameras out so I can ask.

We went Sunday and heard one gobble on the roost, but he was on private property. Saw another one strutting on a gas line about 200 yards on private property.

Tried calling him closer…but you know how well that works.

River was running too high to kayak down, so we will give it a go again this weekend or the next.

Property is so skinny and long that I don’t have high hopes of finding a bird on the WMA. All the private property has fresh clear cuts and burnt pines.

Never been there, so this is just a WAG. If legal it sounds like this may be a place more productive with a late evening hunt, at least the birds might be headed in your direction naturally. Don't get me wrong I hate to hunt this way but sometimes you just have to play the cards that you are dealt. Anyway, just an idea.

Yeah I’m not much of an afternoon/evening turkey hunter. Really wish they would go back to the 1:00 pm cutoff, but that’s another discussion.

I just want to get my son his second bird and we will give it another try this weekend. Last weekend was super cold and windy on Sunday, so it was exactly the ideal conditions.

    Appreciate the advice though.

I agree on the 1 o'clock cutoff, argued several times on here for it.
    Good luck this weekend.

Even though Im an anti-restrictionist Ill take the 1:00 cutoff so it forces me and everyone else to go home and nap!

NOPE never ask for a restriction EVER

Asking for a restriction is akin to asking about boat repairs on a hunting forum :D

    Sorry Bohica but I couldn’t resist ;)

I shot a few on the SW corner, west of a burned out bridge, but it was almost 20 years ago. I haven't been back since.
