Gomez Point

Hi all, I will be back down for vacation in a few weeks. No camping for me this time but I will be heading down to the 10K to fish for a day. I was interesting in knowing what that bottom make up is off of Gomez Point, the tip of Panther Key. Does anyone care to share? It appears to be hard bottom but correct me if I am wrong. Would it be an area worthy of some time? I was thinking possibly fishing the edges of that bottom where it meets the deep water of the Faka Union River.

Thanks 10Kman, hopefully we will do well! Last time I fished around there was 2020.

If you make the assumption that the bottom off of all the oceanside keys in the 10K area is hard to one extent or other (on the outside of each key.. ) you won't be far off... Some do have the features you've spotted - many also have one or more oyster bars as well... from the north end - all the way down to Lostman's...

Thanks Capt Lemay! If you were going to approach fishing that kind of bottom, what would you expect to find? Is it just holding pinfish or do larger predator fish stage on those deeper edges? Is it worth pursuing if I only had one day to fish during my time back in SWFL I mean?  The day I'm looking at will have a low, incoming tide starting early in the morning prior to sunrise. I contemplating coming down from Port of the Islands and starting my fishing on the outside where the tide will be moving sooner and faster than deep in the inside backcountry. Then as the tide rises, work my way back inside. The question popped into my mind though to investigate areas like that -- if they are worth pursuing that is. I could imagine snook and others staging on those deeper edges, waiting for bait to sweep by them into the channels with the tide. Am I dreaming though?

Bottom configuration and makeup is only one of many different factors when you're looking for fish.... Current, water clarity, whether there's bait showing (or any sign of fish feeding...), water temperature, etc.   All are just as important.  Tough deal if you only have one day to fish...  My best advice is to keep moving, fish points and any place where you can see moving water in the depth you choose.... and that's just a start... One thing is certain - if you're able to fish with someone who really knows the area - you'll learn more in a day - than you will on your own for a year...

    It does! Thank you!

I have fished that area numerous times over the years and grew up just north of there in Ft. Myers. I just live in Montana now and don't get to come back often to fish. I will be sure to make a post on the forum after the trip to let you know how we did. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

    God bless.
