New Lure scent

Anytime I buy a new lure, mostly plastic swim baits, I seem to catch a couple peacocks on my lake, after that, after the lure has been used, i cant seem to get another bite. I think it probably has to do with scent of the new lure out of the package. What's the best scent attractant to put on lures?

Scent is not going to stay on a fast moving plastic bait very long. Not necessary to apply it and just a waste. It may help when fishing something slow along the bottom. I have never used it.

I'm in the "something else" camp... Toss what draws bites then switch to something else when they're no longer striking what you're casting at them. Let that new lure sit a few weeks before using it again.  I'll have my anglers alternate between leadheads with plastic or Gulp tails and hardbaits... When they're not drawing bites we'll go to small spoons or spinners (and maybe at dawn or dusk make the switch to something topwater..).

Funny thing... if I have someone tossing flies... the fish will keep eating that same fly wherever we go until we wear it out or lose it.  Remember, though... we're not stuck in one spot we keep moving all day long... If you're on foot, fishing out of your backyard, changing lures is important..

I'm not exactly a freshwater type so I'm still learning that world (after spending the last fifty years in salt or brackish waters (and that's still where I'm guiding most days - like yesterday out of Flamingo...).
