Shouldn't be. We used to get great runs in December. 12/28/90 I was out and came in at 10:30 with 500 lbs. because my brother was getting married the next day and I had to sell all that shrimp and get ready for the wedding. I called a friend who arrived at Rickenbacker after I left and he got 800 lbs. January should be prime time for shrimp in Biscayne Bay.
Just talked to my contact on the river. Last night it slowed, but before there were boats with as much as 3,000 lbs. Size was OK, not small but not large.
any word from the last couple nights? thinking about heading out tomorrow night, Tuesday, but its going to warm up. might be worth it if they've been going the last couple days.
They were thick last night, got a couple gallon bags in two hours work. Mostly med and large with a couple jumbos. They’re faster than I remember or maybe I’m just getting older. Also had the underwater light for the first time that helped attract them but helped them see the net as well I think. Fished for an hour or so afterwards with no luck only a small snapper. Did see a boat hook up on a tarpon but it came off.
Just got a report. Been slow this past week but last night they started to see some. My contact is going tonight. He better save me some! I'll post tomorrow when I get a report.
Seems to be hit or miss but was hoping to hear good news about the fishing. Planning on doing a night trip Sunday possibly if the weather holds up. Going to try to focus more on tarpon instead of shrimp.
Water temps that night were 65 up to almost 69 degrees - a bit cold still for tarpon around the bridges (we never saw a single fish... and only caught snapper and jacks in docklights - the few snook that came up to the fly weren't buying... ). It will warm up a bit this weekend so maybe... I'm sure Government cut with live shrimp instead of the flies we were using might get you bit... The night we fished, Wednesday into Thursday morning I was mislead a bit by the tide station at Virginia key... It showed 70 degree water... Fowey is showing 73... Sunday I'm booked out of Flamingo which should be a different story entirely...
Haven’t gotten a chance to get out. Hopefully weather gets better soon. I’m in a motorized kayak. I don’t mind getting wet during the day but at night I need smooth waters.
