That is what people say still catching bass on worms. I have caught almost every bass I have ever caught on a plastic worm. I need to learn how to use some other types of baits. Zoom flukes spinner baits and buzz baits various plugs to start.
All baits are just tools that allow efficient coverage of the water column and to mimic a forage item. Speed , depth and color are the variables . Sound also can come into play. Part of what makes it fun .. Bottom line , plastic worms can just about do all the above..
Yeah I still use worms. But my all around favorite bass lure is a watermelon green zoom super fluke.
It has a nice wobble on the sink, so you can work it like a senko super slow and subtle, twitch it more quickly along the surface, or anything in between. And it slides over/through pads & grass nicely too.
I will always use plastic worms. Growing up I fished with family that were targeting other species usually. That meant I was usually anchored on one spot for some time. So I learned to finesse a plastic worm at a young age. It was actually somewhat of a blessing as it taught me to be precise in my casting and work a worm meticulously through cover or structure.
In Florida, there is no greater bass lure than a black zoom trick worm Texas rigged.
They work but are not durable at all. They do not stay on the hook for very long! Bass easily shake them off because they are so thin. Very frustrating.
Zoom watermelon trick worm. Hooked in the center with a smallish hook that lets the worm sink naturally. It pulses as it sinks. Deadly in my little lake. Toss it next to some lily pads , watch your line as it sinks, little tick and it’s game on. Black Berkeley power worm Texas rigged with black bullet sinker when targeting larger fish.
I still use plastic worms (or some iteration of them) for bass most of the time. For me, they are a tried and true lure transcending all of the latest and greatest, day in and day out.
So I personally all year long slay big bass on small swim baits and jerk baits. Just the other day I had a morning where I caught 8 decent fish on the jerk bait for about 15 minutes. Then caught a nice 4 pounder on a small bluegill swim bait. Personally I like to match the hatch and I try to fish bluegill, babybass, black and white or black and gold.
That being said my number one go to bass bait is a black curling tail worm on a Texas rig. -Jay
