Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.  Connie and I were on the water even though it's the fall turnover here (water mix) and the fish are pretty much turned off till that's over.  Needed to run the boat though so took our overly ostentatious yacht out for Thanksgiving morning.  No fish, but we sure showed the neighbors some class.

That's the open belt drive (run a sawmill, etc.)  The much larger open flywheel is on the other side and can be spun by hand to start the tractor if no battery juice.

You should have seen the belts, saws and contraptions they hooked up to them!

My Grandaddy was one of the first people in our community to have a Lilliston peanut picker. They were manufactured in Albany, GA. and he was one of a few people to use one of the first ones. 
One of the buttons holding his overall straps popped off and the strap fell and got caught in the drive shaft. He grabbed the back of the tractor to brace himself and it tore the overalls off of him. He wouldn't wear overalls after that.

Irrigation pumps.  We were getting one out of the barn. 

Stuck my hand in a wasp nest.  They got me all the way up my arm to the side of my head.  Ì hate wasp I swell up from them bastids.

I am old.... But I am pretty sure that you started the tractor on the flywheel shown.... The one on the left side of the tractor.... I grew up around several open flywheel tractors....  And they were always manually started on the left side of the tractor.. Saw it countless times... did it myself in my teens more times than I can remember.......

Yes - the flywheel in the picture is the engine flywheel.  Very simple to start with it alone.

Our next OSHA safety meeting will be on proper hand prop airplane engine start technique.  Be there.

My uncle Allen had a 1940 Farmall tractor.  You started it by the hand crank in the front.

I never did try it..  It looked to dangerous to me.  I let the older ones do it.  I was only around 12.
