Fish traps

I know it isn't legal most places. 
But, say hypothetically have you ever used, seen, been around a fish trap?

My Daddy has been dead 40 years so I guess the statute of limitations has run out,
but I remember him making a 34" diameter fish trap, that would slide up in a 36" culvert.
When the water would get high he would slide that trap
in there aiming down stream and bait it with cottonseed meal cake.

Next evening pull the trap with 100 or more fish in it.
Called it lazy man's fishing.

Them was good times .had me running fish to the
neighbor folks who had less than we did.

Seen it done on the St. Johns river. Believe it used to be legal ?

Fish traps here in Florida have a very, very bad reputation - particularly in the salt... Doubt they're legal in either fresh or salt waters here - particularly salt since industrial scale fish traps on our reefs in the 70's and 80'l nearly wiped out entire reef populations before they were outlawed.... This was seen in early '80's..  Was a hoop type trap.

No different than minnow traps (which are legal, but have specifications on max size, hole size etc)

Hoop traps on St. John's for catfish are legal. 
I ran fish traps in federal waters for red grouper until 2007, very clean fishery
