Cast net for mullet

what size cast net you guys using for catching mullet, I have an 8 ft pogie net but it’s a bear to blind cast , also have a 6 ft cheap I bought at sports authority back when sports authority sold guns and fishing gear. The 6 ft seems to small, mullet spook while nets in air. Looking for the right net to net some mullet just Incase there is no bait on the beach.

I also have a cheap 6 ft net for mullet. The reason I use that over my bigger pogie nets is I can throw it fast and farther. That’s the trick i find with mullet especially when in the boat. Sometimes it’s harder to sneak up close to them but if you can sling that net in the direction they’re swimming off you can usually get them.   And if you go bigger then just don’t use a really heavy net as you can’t sling it quick and most of the time you’re getting mullet over shallow water anyway

BC makes a valid point for sure but i use 10' 1.5# per ft for pogies, 8' 1# per ft for Mullet (or as close as you can find)

I had the same problem. I went for a cheaper Betts 9 foot with much lighter lead. Much easier to throw and if your netting mullet in shallow water you don’t need a tone of lead

My brother used to have a 4 footer he called the "shotgun". Had about 40' of rope on it...he shore fished, the smaller net allowed him to get over the schools down the shoreline before they were spooked.

Shore and pier guy here, using a $15 wally-world special that is a whopping 3' ... My main area that I use it is a narrow piece between grass and pier pilings, a small tight spot where a 6' net wouldn't even fit and I figured the small size would give me more control for accurate throws.

Only complaint about it is the mesh size... 3/4" gets too many of the whitebait caught on the gills etc. I've looked high and low and can't find a small (3 or 4' max) net with small mesh (1/4" - 1/2") never mind one at an affordable price (the ones I've found are 8'+ and $20-25 per foot).  Considering experimenting and making my own using my current net as a template and hardware source.

And larger mesh, 1/2" or so which also helps it sink faster.
