Fun day. Skipjacks were thick. Ran into the Mahi going to the fishing grounds. BIG Rosies, Hake, and a nice snowy. Can’t find a Barrel fish to save our lives!! One day hopefully.
We have spots from 500-900. We don’t have a bottom machine. Lots of boring days last and lost gear snagging structure trying to find fish. Still haven’t found a Barrelfish. More boring days ahead this year looking for it. It can be very boring staring at the rod tip but we’re addicted to it.

When you do get a barrel first thing hose off and brush slime off.Nothing better than watching rod tip bounce.
Try bringing your rigs off the bottom a bit for barrels. One thing I hate when looking for a big pull is rosies plugging up the hooks.
I applaud your “no bottom machine”.
Last year to change things up I erased all my numbers (had them backed up) and went out and ran watching my bottom machine like it was the first day ever fishing... worked out pretty good. Had a nice catch of grouper, hogfish and snapper. We are blessed with a lot of bottom where I fish though.
It just reads depth, no bottom definition. We just pick a depth and drop and drop and drop and drop till we find fish. I had seen some fishing show raising there bait like 50 ft off the bottom, didn’t know if they were messing with people or what. We’ll have to try that strategy.
