I remember one year we were diving for Crawfish (Lobster) and after we limited out on Bugs we went deep dropping and caught some nice Snowy Groupers.
We got checked on the way in and the FWC officer asked us if we got the Groupers spearfishing.  :|

Pretty bad when the populous knows the regs better then the rule makers.
THERE SHOULD BE NO COMMERCIAL FISHING ALLOWED FOR ANY SPECIES THAT IS CONSIDERED OVERFISHED.

We have more to lose than they do.

It’s really fun when you get a mixed bunch of snapper. We got wrote up years ago in the Keys for having undersized “cuberas”. We tried to
tell the guy they were dog dog snapper, even got out Vic Dunaway’s book on fish ID and showed the two officers pictures of both. We finally had a couple local charter captains show up, and they agreed with us. So they let us go with a warning. Not sure what it was for, since we did nothing wrong.

Must admit I know nothing of Dog Snapper.

I snapped these Cubera pictures while fishing the Elbow:

Its just an indication of just how confusing the regulations can be.

Dog snappers have a visible white triangle underneath their eyes

I agree they need better training. But blaming the entire fwc for some paper pushers ignorance doesn’t seem fair

    Extremely good point!

It's not just paper pushers. I've had FWC officers threaten to ticket us several times while still living in SE Fl because they didn't know the difference between dog and cubera snapper. We showed them the difference on our cell phones, but they still pushed it until we found pics of both on their website. I actually had a different one try to ticket us for having a illegal blue fin tuna, also. It was a black fin. Same deal, got on the phone, found pics of both, then he said "well, I guess it isn't a bluefin" and turned around and walked off. As anglers, we are required to be able to identify the fish we catch. The FWC officers should be able to identify them at a glance.

    Absolutely!   It's their job.

A game warden isn’t a rule maker. They are responsible for enforcement.

I won’t disagree that they should know what it is they are enforcing, if they are enforcing it. I will say that they are some of the lowest paid officers in FL which causes a lot of them to leave for higher paying agencies. The loss of experienced officers results in things like what are shared here.

Regardless, they should act professionally and acknowledge mistakes, if they make them. No amount of pictures can replace hands on experience and their improved ability to do their jobs well because of it.
