Windy day but good outcome in the creeks

JaxKayakJaxKayak Posts: 73 Deckhand
Wasn't optimistic because the wind was pretty bad, but ended up with a PB trout at 26" and 6 pounds, nice 23 inch red, 2 15" trout and a 14" flounder. Ended up being a good day out of San Pablo. Big trout and red were on top water.

Went out again today. Nice two days on the water. This is from both days. Big red is at 27. All reds and trout on top water. Got the flounder on a voodoo shrimp. Also caught a lot of other trout and flounder on the voodoo but undersized.

So my buddy and me originally had bigger top water baits trying to target bigger fish and we're getting no bites at first even though conditions looked really good. We noticed a lot a small bait so I switched to a smaller bait and started getting hits immediately with the smaller skitterwalk.

Split ring and a loop knot or.....??

Normally we go one or the other......

Yea it was a split ring with a loop knot. Usually don't have the top water with the split ring so it is just habit to do the loop knot. Not a fan of the split ring after this week though. Had a big lady fish take my bigger top water before changing out that had a split ring as well. The loop knot I guess got into the split ring and as it jump around and moved the leader through the split ring and lost the lure without breaking the line with the loop knot still intact. Probably shouldn't do a loop knot on the split ring now that I think about it.

That's crazy. Had that happen to me once but I broke off something huge that I never saw and then later in the day while hooked up to a tarpon my line breaks and I guess an overhand knot formed in the braid and caught the split ring of a lure hooked to a lemon shark that was swimming with a school of mullet. The lure eventually rips loose off the lemon shark and it was my skitterwalk from earlier that day. What?!?!?!. A lemon shark on topwater? When it hit I thought it was a 50" red and was super bummed all day. Then broke off the tarpon and then got my lure back. Crazy stuff happens on the water. Like Houdini ladyfish slipping loop knots through split rings.
