Full moon Mango madness! 100' Hudson 2-27

clarosaclarosa Posts: 931 Officer
Decided to run a trip for the boys for the full moon while the weather was nice on Sat afternoon. Left the dock around 12ish with a well full of pinfish, whitebait and select shrimp. Of course a few boxes dines. Wanted to mess with some red grouper for a little bit then get anchored on the mango grounds a couple hrs before sunset. The RG bite wasn't great with that full moon tide. Twas a rippin! We did get 5 keepers and tons of shorts with biggest being 31". Fished from 95-105' for the RG. Around 4:30 we decided to head to one of our mango spots. Set the rhodan and started chumming. Tons of almacos and banded rudder fish all over! Tough to punch the Snappaslappa jigs thorugh them, even with a 1.5ozer. Decided to use the conventional fishfinder rig and started pulling some quality mangs up. First few were in the 20" range. Did get like 7 or 8 keeper sized throw back gags up to 32" which were fun on the little 30lb Talica snapper set up. Was slow and steady for the first 45mins to an hr with lots of by catch but mangs coming over the rail here and there. Once the sun started to set it was on! Double, triple, quadruple hooks ups! Some tanks too with a few in the 26-28" range. Big ole wide body mangs which are always fun! And of course, even more big gags now on my 4k spinner which definitely hurts the wrist. By the time the sun was totally set we had 50 on the clicker and needed 20 more. Usually with a full moon once that moon pops up the mangs go crazy for a good 30-40 mins. Moon rose about 7:15 and the bite......did not really happen. Mangs turned off. Huge show still just much slower bite and not the size we were catching before. Took us around another hr and half to get those last 20. Mission complete! 130qt coolers absolutely topped off! Time to getty on up and scoot back and rehab this sore wrist and back! Was flat calm and made short work of the 50 mile run back in. Caught about 95% of the mango's on 1/2oz-3/4oz Snappaslappa jigs with long 30lb fluoro leader and 4-5k spinners. Bait of choice for me was, as always, medium sized pinfish but others were killing them on large whitebait as well as shrimp. Frozen dines only accounted for a few fish. Until next time, tight lines!!
