Dozens of fish caught in an hour and a half

I didn't say I caught them.   I am lucky to get the boat out once every month or so. Yesterday I filmed birds catching fish.  Amazing to watch them swallow fish of that size.  The action was hot and heavy for about an hour and a half with dozens of fish being caught and eaten at Payne's Prairie State Park. I took more snapshots than video because the Cormorants would swallow a fish it caught in a few seconds and the camera wouldn't focus fast enough.  The Wood storks and Blue herons. would take too long to finally eat the fish. and I didn't want to miss all the action with the Cormorants.  A big highlight but I was always too slow to catch them were Bald Eagles diving and getting fish.  I was lucky and caught several good photos and videos of most of the fish catching.

Definitely gizzard shad. Never seen them so thick in there.

Thanks, I was wondering what type of fish they were.  I knew they were a type of shad to me they are great bait for bass when they are small.  I didn't know they could get that big up to 20 inches and 2 lbs.  The article said being a type of herring they are good smoked.  Anybody ever heard about someone eating them?  They make a run to spawn like a salmon so maybe that is why there were so many in a small area.  It was fun to watch the birds swimming around with good size fish in their's mouths and how quick the Cormorants could swallow a fish of that size. It only took them a couple of seconds I had to hurry to get photos.  Got so many good photos of them but missed a lot of photos opps.

sounds much like the shad run in the St John's each year. fly fishers love to catch those things on 4 wts and swear it's a blast.

Anyone else remember that huge fleet of Asian boats the state brought in to get the shad out of Newnans Lake about 10 yrs ago? Looked like the same shad. I remember crossing the lake at night and the shad would be jumping in the boat like mullet.

I looked up the gizzard shad harvest on Apopka awhile back. They removed millions of pounds !

The striper guides use them for bait in Lake Lanier GA.  I caught one and it stunk.  I don't think I'd eat one.

Fantastic filmz and photo'z as usual!! You are one Marlin Perkins MF'er!! Loved the kite photo'z!! On the gizzard shad, back when I lived in Lk. Worth I'd fish the spillways that drained the f/w canals into Lk. Worth for snook and tarpon after big rain stormz! The favorite bait used by the spillway rats who were always there was a big G-shad!! They would cast net them out of lakes, ponds and canals and have big live well tanks on their p/u trucks. I've seen them use and catch huge snook on shad up to 2 or 3 poundz!!! They would as I did sometimes use bluegillz or ciclidz as bait but the shad were by far their favoritez!!!!!!!
