And taking tens of thousands of snook for cat food was a good idea.  Got it.
prison food, like Maine lobster back in the day.
Honestly snook isn't my favorite.  I think it is overrated in food value at the moment.

    You seeing any dead fish?
I called into the FWC public webinar for Sarasota Bay to give my input and local reports. When someone mentioned wanting to keep snook closed, the panel mentioned in their response that something like 80% of slot snook are released even when in season. Guess the culture has shifted towards C&R quite a bit, personally I'm fine eating other stuff.
For me pompano is better, so is spanish.  I even like trout more than snook.  The other issue I have with snook is the volume of meat.  I tend to only feed 2-3 people, a slot snook is too much meat and I don't like wasting it.

I would like the option of keeping an injured fish rather than feeding it to the crabs

If it were enforceable that would make sense, but I don't see a way to legalize that without essentially having an open season.

been so long since I ate snook I barely remember how it tastes honestly. But I'm certainly ok to keep eating pomps, spanish, sheepshead, snapper, etc.

I am just saying allowing the keeping of one a day. They could still encourage catch and release. I don't fish for snook specifically and release them anyway. Under the current regs is one is injured I still have to release it. The simple fact is 25 % of released fish die anyway. This is FWC'S statistic quoted in Waterline

No but I am further north
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.

Good luck Art, I hope it doesn't reach your area.

Good news I fished all over the harbor this weekend along with 51 other teams and didn’t see or smell any red tide. It also blew 35 and I had my **** handed to me all day, every day.

Mind if I ask what section?  I ask because I am headed down later this year.  My father in-law said upper harbor is a mess, lower (Cape Haze Point, Bull and Turtle) are perfectly fine.  Seems like mid-West is where things clean up.  Does that align with your experience?

We fished mostly in and around Turtle, but I talked to other teams who fished anywhere from Stump Pass all the way down to the Caloosahatchee River and no one said anything about red tide. The winning team had 81.5” inches (biggest snook each day). We caught plenty but could only put together 61”. It was tough due to the wind and not fun having to cross the harbor every morning and afternoon to Cabbage Key where the tournament is held out of. Caught lots of good trout too, have another tournament this week that is grand slam and watch I won’t catch any big trout 😒

Excellent, thanks for the update.  Glad to hear consistent experiences with the lower harbor.

Congrats on the quality fish and best wishes with your slam activities.

Thanks. I forgot to mention that my non self deploying trolling motor decided to self deploy going 50 some odd mph in a 3’ chop. To say it was violent would be a huge understatement, and I thought for sure it was going to be ripped off the bow. How it is still there and still working is beyond me.

I'm going to listen in at 9am but here is the recommendation by staff to split Tampa Bay from Sarasota Bay south...

I read it 4 times and I still can't tell if this is the new law or recommendations.  When does the final decision take effect? Anyone?

Well it would take effect after 5/31/2021 (end of this month).  It would be new regulations (executive order) for Sarasota Bay and south.  Tampa Bay would resume normal regulations.

It is official now:  from Sarasota Bay to Naples, trout will open June 1 with a new boat limit of six fish per boat.  Snook and redfish in the same area will stay closed for another year.

6 per boat seems sensible given your average inshore boat generally only takes 3 people comfortably so a couple each is probably as much as you’d eat fresh anyway. Best to err on the side of caution to make sure it’s sustainable. Easy enough to add a few mackerel and snapper if you want to gorge yourselves 😉

I like it. Redfish and snook in Sarasota bay south will explode in population with 1 more year of closure. I have not seen so many redfish in Sarasota bay in years.

Love it.  6 trout is fair.  feed 4-6 people.  Reds and snooks are exploding in Charlotte Harbor, let it continue.

So does this mean if you're wading? Does it mean that you can only keep trout if you hire a guide? Or is it also back to 3 fish per person for recreational fishing without a guide or a boat?

I understand it as 3 per person if one person is on the boat.  Regardless how many people on a boat, 6 is the max vessel limit.

Bag limit is three per person per day.  Wading or in a boat, with or without a guide.  But no more than six per boat, even if there are more than two people fishing from that boat.

Thanks guys, I'm planning a trip to Naples in October and a trip to Sarasota in December. Was hoping to keep a couple trout.
  • kellerclkellercl Posts: 13,487 AG
I'm happy.  I always disliked 5 guys keeping 25 trout back in the day.  I like keeping as much as the next guy, but only keep enough for a single dinner
