I would assume that if he was fishing in a competition, he would have been using a rod and reel.
If this was so, its a pity he didn't get the weight verified, a few trophy shots and then returned the fish.
I like to think that big fish tend to produce offspring with the capability of getting big, its all in the genes.
Also, sometimes the bigger the fish, the less tasty it is.
