So now that we have this nice weather change, what is the effect as far as us shore bound fishermen? Specifically thinking of around the Shell Mound area. I know from experience bait fish won't be as plentiful, but what else?
Last week I decided to head out to Shell Mound hoping to fish off of the pier there. To my disappointment, the place looked like a Walmart on a Black Friday. People everywhere and this was doing the week where normally there are very few people there. I took a hike on Dennis Creek trail and headed for Cedar Keys. The answer to your question is YES the weather change does affect fishing. It brings outside many fishermen that normally would have stayed home because of the heat. To my surprise, I went to Cedar Keys and #4 pier only had one person on it. I figure I would see what going on at the main pier and drive back if it was to busy to fish. The main pier only had 3 or 4 other fishermen on it so I stayed there. Had a great time sitting there for 3 hours catching fish. I caught probably 30 fish and only 5 or 6 were catfish. I caught a couple of 12-inch reds, several croakers, whitings, and a couple of other types. Was bitten off by a nice Spanish Mac and again by a good size shark. I left a 4-inch catfish on the hook and gave it a try to see what would happen. It lasted just about 30 seconds before a monster fish of some kind hit it and was taking my line out at record speed. The 10 lbs line didn't stand a chance against whatever it was. Change over to my heavy pole 30 lbs test and nothing would touch the pinfish cut bait I used I believe the cooler weather did bring fish closer to shore. Overall it was a fun day but didn't catch anything over 14 inches.
